>> it's thirsty. yeah he's thirsty. yeah. thank you. next, at 11, it was kind of hurtful because i don't know. >> you've been there for so long and sacrifice all this. >> a disappointed former tesla employee sharing his story. tonight we are hearing from one of the thousands of workers recently laid off in the bay area, the 11:00 news on ktvu. >> fox two starts now. >> tesla is shrinking workforce, impacting thousands of people here in the bay area. hello again everyone. i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. >> the company has laid off close to 14,000 workers since last month in just this week, thousands of job openings were eliminated. new tonight ktvu joy huerta spoke to one man who says his job was cut without warning. >> nico murillo is a proud tesla owner, mainly because he's part of the team that built these cars at the tesla factory in fremont. but on april 15th, his dream job would sound more like a nightmare.

>> i was on my way to work and then i got a personal email about, my position had been eliminated and in disbelief, he showed up to work. i got my badge. i went to the turnstile, and then, then it didn't work and it turned red, started beeping, and i was like, is this real? >> morelos? just one of the roughly 14,000 tesla employees to be laid off since april, 10% of the company's workforce are committed to his career. he'd spend much of 2023 sleeping in the back of his car, all to avoid the daily three hour round trip to his house in the central valley. tesla's latest move going from more than 3000 worldwide job openings on its website to just three, one tech expert suggests. elon musk, posting his opinions on social media is partly to blame for the company's current slump. >> what elon musk did with x or

school students to be able to graduate some of the topics would include paying for college, setting up retirement accounts, and learning how the stock market works. >> the superintenden of the berkeley unified school district testified today before congress, defending the district over claims of anti-semitism across its campuses. the superintendent testified before the house committee of education and workforce. some of the alleged incidents include violent and hateful comments on school grounds, directed at jewish students. the superintendent confirmed there have been instances of anti-semitism, but says accusations that the district is not taking action are inaccurate. >> do not publicly share our actions because student information is private and legally protected under federal and state law. as a result, some believe we do nothing. this is not true. >> the federal investigation into berkeley unified stems from complaints filed back in february by the anti-defamation league and the louis d brandeis center for human rights under law, and we spoke with marci miller, senior education counsel

at the brandeis center. >> i didn't hear any appropriate action that she had actually taken other than whatever it was , was to be kept confidential. so the students still feel unsafe, incidents have escalated since october 7th, and even more so since the original complaint was filed. >> a coalition of parents and community members held a rally in berkeley today to share the message that overall, berkeley is an inclusive community. >> new tonight a postal worker in the east bay, terrified as she was robbed at gunpoint. ktvu is amber lee spoke with the victim, who says she is still shaken up. so surveillance video shows the female postal carrier putting items into a mail box in front of a home in dublin monday afternoon around 430, when suddenly a masked man, followed by a second person comes up from behind her. >> the postal worker, who asked not to be identified, describes being robbed at gunpoint. >> somebody came behind me and boom, just hit me and put a gun

to the back of my head and he said, give me your keys. you don't want to die, do you? i go, no, no, no. so i reached in and got my keys, gave him my keys. he goes, where's your phone? you got two minutes. >> the carrier went to the mail truck to get her phone and handed it to the armed robber, while fearing the worst. >> oh my god, i'm going to die! >> but the two men ran away after taking the keys to mailboxes and the truck along with her cell phone, she went to a neighbor for help in calling 911. >> i thought he was going to shoot me when he was done, but i thought, well, i'm thinking in my mind, just stay calm, stay calm, stay calm. that's the best thing to do, to stay calm. >> she says she did not suffer any physical injuries, but is struggling with what happened. she tells me she's getting help from a psychiatrist. >> i feel anxious and i can't sleep and my heart is like pounding. >> reporter still, she proudly showed me her uniform. she says she has worked for the us postal service for 33 years. the 63 year old tells me she had planned to retire in about a

year and a half. do you think you'll be able to go back to work? >> i want to, i really want to because i like my job, but i think i will. i love my customers. i like to serve them. >> one neighbor shared surveillance video of a possible suspect vehicle, a blue sedan seen driving to and from the scene. the mail carrier tells me she's grateful for all the support she's received from neighbors and dublin police. the us postal inspection service is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible in dublin. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news new at 11 the city of san francisco has settled a lawsuit filed by a former employee at the district attorney's office, according to the chronicle. >> jeffrey palette accused former da chesa boudin of wrongful termination in 2020. the former investigator reportedly claimed the firing was in retaliation for claims of

improper conduct during the investigation of a deadly police shooting. the city paid a $835,000 settlement and did not admit to any wrongdoing, the city attorney's office saying in a statement. the city is committed to providing a workplace free from retaliation. we believe the settlement is an appropriate resolution given the inherent cost of continued litigation. >> also new at 11, a piedmont man has avoided jail time in the case of a deadly hit and run. 67 year old timothy germano pleaded no contest in a crash that killed gregory turnage jr back in 2021. police say hamano ran from the scene, leaving his injured wife in the car. germano was sentenced to six years in prison, but his attorney says he has been serving house arrest and has been essentially serving out his sentence. >> new tonight brentwood teachers rallied for a new contract ahead of a school board meeting. when do we run? >> when do we want it? now. >> the teachers say they're at

an impasse with the district after an offer that included no pay increase. the educators say they need a fair salary that keeps up with the cost of living. otherwise, some say they may be forced to leave the district. >> i see that i'm going to be getting a 0% raise. i did the math, and when i did the math, i figured i can be recruited almost anywhere and make 15% more, and that's 15% more for the rest of my life. >> the district superintendent telling the brentwood, the first person i have is in a difficult place financially. he cited mandated expenses such as pensions and declining enrollment following the pandemic. the emeryville city council officially approved several measures trying to curb illegal tobacco sales. >> the council passed a retail licensing requirement that includes annual monitoring, fines and suspensions for retailers who don't comply with tobacco laws. the council also agreed to end the sale of menthol, along with other candy

burning 15 police vehicles at a training facility in portland. >> and this story does begin tonight's west coast wrap. a self-proclaimed anarchist group, claimed responsibility in a social media post. the group says it acted after hearing law enforcement was planning to clear protesters out of portland state university's library. portland police officers say they are investigating that post . no one was hurt during the fire in arizona. >> a car crash left four people injured and one vehicle sinking in the mud. that incident happened near desert desert sky mall in phoenix this morning. two cars were involved. police say a fire hydrant was hit during the crash, creating a mud pit. one woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. three other people suffered minor injuries and in los angeles, a car slammed into a see's candy storefront, forcing it to close for cleanup and repairs. >> you can see the shattered

glass and broken doors from the damage. no one was injured during this collision. police say the driver was cooperating during the investigation and no word tonight on the cause of that crash. and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu west coast rap with alex savage airs 7:00 monday through friday. or you can find around the clock coverage at west coast wrap.com. >> new at 11 tonight. san francisco police are sharing these photos today from a recent narcotics dealer. arrest. officers obtained a search warrant on may 3rd for an ongoing investigation into 27 year old darwin paz. they arrested paz near golden gate avenue and leavenworth street. police say they found fentanyl, a concealed gun and live rounds on him after searching his residence. police say they also uncovered an assault rifle, more fentanyl, several gun parts and equipment to make controlled substances. paz is now booked at the county jail. >> a popular jewish deli in oakland has been the victim of nearly a dozen burglaries over

the past two years. >> our crime reporter henry lee, spoke with the ceo of wise sons deli, who says something urgently has to change. >> car crashes, cars driving into our lobby and really taking out, you know, our lobby and our counters. >> burglaries in the middle of the night since the beginning of 2022, we've had 11 break ins and we've had three break ins. >> just these past couple of weeks. >> it's been one mishap after another at wise sons jewish delicatessen at 17th and franklin in downtown oakland. but unlike other business owners who say they've had it with crime in the city, deli ceo jeff weinstein says he's staying put. we're not going anywhere right now. >> we're committed to being here. i'm committed to these employees in this, in this location. i'm committed to serving food, really, you know, food to our guests. >> but criminals seem committed to breaking into the deli on may 1st. these intruders broke in and rummaged through the restaurant. in most of the break ins, not much is actually taken. but on monday night, a burglar did steal some tablets. this

burglar broke into a side door, went inside and soon went back out. >> in that period of time was that i can be as angry or upset as i want, but i need to be able to focus on what i can control. >> not that weinstein is happy with what's been going on, but something has to change for that to be sustainable. >> we simply can't afford, you know, every couple of weeks to be replacing doors, to be replacing a segment or remodeling. >> last year, this acura mdx crashed into the deli, ending up completely inside. >> there were two cars that were racing. one of them cut the other one off, sending that other car into our lobby. >> the crash also sheared off a fire hydrant. the wreck caused at least a quarter of $1 million in damage. the deli had to close for a couple of months for repairs. in 2022, another car lost control and crashed into the deli. customers say they're glad weinstein is standing pat. >> good for him. i'm happy that he's going to stay. and you know, entrepreneurs will continue to hopefully overcome

first time in franchise history, the sharks will have the first pick in the nhl draft. ktvu lamonica peters tells us more about the 17 year old player with bay area roots who could soon be skating at the shark tank at o'flaherty's irish pub in downtown san jose. >> sharks fans say they're happy to hear the team will have the number one pick in next month's nhl draft. that means they'll have the chance to select 17 year old macklin celebrini. >> last season was tough. you know, for any sharks fan, you know, it's. no one likes losing. and all you can hope is that they're building for the future, right? >> sharks general manager mike greer says celebrini has the talent and dedication to play in the national hockey league. >> there's probably some six year old kids out there skating, so it's given these kids who were playing youth hockey, you know, someone to look up to and say, you know, like, i can i can possibly be that kid down the

road who was a junior shark celebrating his family moved to the bay area from vancouver back in 2018. >> his father, rick celebrini, is a former mls soccer player and is now the director of sports medicine and performance for the golden state warriors. >> to have him in our own backyard, so to speak, and to, you know, mom, to bring him a meal every once in a while and do his laundry would be would be a lot of fun. >> san jose mayor matt marin also posted this video message on social media. >> like many sharks fans, i'm crossing my fingers and hoping that we will be able to welcome back macklin celebrini. san jose sharks junior al-um celebrini a standout player for boston university, also received the 2024 hobey baker award, which recognizes the best amateur hockey player in the country. >> we're able to think about how uplifting it is for this local guy whose dad is working in the bay area sports, and what can we do as a greater community to not just celebrate him, but all be a part of his team?

>> this year's draft will be held in las vegas on june 28th and june 29th, so sharks fans can head to vegas and watch the sharks team select the number one pick for the first time. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> heather farm park in walnut creek was bustling today with people getting outside to enjoy the warm weather. we saw a lot of people with their hats and sunglasses to protect them from all that sunshine, and the warm weather came at the right time for children to learn about weather out at the oakland coliseum. >> today was weather education day. the a's and ktvu teaming up once again for the special event that brings out elementary and middle school science lovers to stomper. >> he came by this tv station because he goes, i want to know what's up with the weather because he knows about right field. so which way should he go? that way. okay, run, run, run! >> way to go, roberta. >> our meteorologists had the chance to educate the crowd about weather and tracking the weather. you heard mark out there. rosemary was out there. roberta and chief meteorologist

bill martin also out at the coliseum. always a solid day, right, bill? >> yeah, it was good times. and the kids are into it. >> they get the day off school. they got to watch the first set of a doubleheader and the weather was perfect. and they learned a little some they learned what was the hot air balloon that you guys send up. >> what does that what is that's the morning. >> that's the sounding balloon. we sent it up in the morning. in the afternoon from all the major airports. and that's what the data from that is what gets input into the models that we talk about so often. sweet. so yeah, the weather balloons are kind of the basic, basic basis of everything that we do. thanks for asking, julia. julie haener. as you look at the temperatures from today, know that tomorrow will be wmer by a good few degrees. i think we'll see some low 90s tomorrow, so this will be a pleasant day and we'll find temperatures instead of in the low 80s, upper 80s, maybe even some low 90s for the most part. so pleasant. and then no fog along the coast. winds are slightly well, they are offshore right now and they're going to continue offshore through the night into tomorrow morning. and temperatures will probably peak tomorrow and into friday, i think both thursday, tomorrow

and friday, the potential for 90 degree reading is for sure a possibility, especially in the central valley. but i think in our inland fringe valleys and then that wind advisory has been retracted a little bit. it's moved east. last night we had an odd here more in marin county and parts of more, more just closer to the coast. now it's further back. it's going to be gone in the morning. the wind advisory will get dropped and the winds are already pretty light out there. there's a gust at 23 in fairfield, santa rosa, gusting to 29, but compared to where they were this afternoon and yesterday, they're down quite a bit. i mean, they were up to 30, 35 miles an hour and we had some 50 mile an hour gusts last night. so that is a good news that the winds are dying down and temperatures are still warm right now at 68 degrees in concord, 70 degrees in livermore. so right. that's an offshore wind. that's kind of a fall pattern. the winds will die down about the time the fog comes back, which is thursday night. tomorrow night into friday morning. and then the fog hangs at the coast friday afternoon. and then saturday

there's a push. and that's when the cooling begins. so the fog should come back. it's going to show up a little bit tomorrow night, but more in earnest on friday and then more significantly on sunday. and that'll facility gate a pretty significant cool down. well yeah. good ten degrees cooler as we head towards the end of the weekend saturday into sunday there are the forecast highs for tomorrow. those upper 80s could easily turn into low 90s. and there you have it a beautiful day today. better tomorrow. hay fever is still a thing. fog comes back on thursday night. >> all right bill, thank you. new at 11 oakland's acts full gospel church celebrated 40 years of ministry under bishop bob jackson. tonight, the church kicked off a series of events. bishop jackson is the founder of the church and still serves as the senior pastor there. the church began with just 13 members attending a bible study, and as the years went on, the group kept growing. the group was studying the book of acts which inspired the name acts. full gospel church has dedicated its mission to serving the community.

as a man of integrity who loved the environment. mccloskey died today at his home in winters at the age of 96. he served seven terms in congress representing san mateo county. mccloskey was known as a liberal republican who later switched parties to become a democrat. although he was a marine corps veteran, he opposed the vietnam war and took on president nixon in the new hampshire primary in 1972. >> he ran against nixon, although he was a combat veteran with shrapnel in his leg. he ran against nixon in new hampshire, opposing the vietnam war, even though he was a decorated, he won every medal imaginable in the marine corps. >> but perhaps pete mccloskey, his greatest legacy involves the environment. he was the coauthor of the endangered species act in

1973, and co-founder of earth day. he is survived by his wife, helen, and four children in san francisco, congresswoman nancy pelosi said in a statement, quote, the sad news of the passing of bay area congressman pete mccloskey was received with great sorrow by so many who viewed him as a visionary, courageous and patriotic american. as a champion for our environment and peace in the world. he brought honor to the state of california and to our country. congressman mccloskey will be sadly missed. >> california senate candidate adam schiff says he has picked up a major endorsement. schiff says his former opponent, congresswoman barbara lee, is now supporting him in the race. schiff said congresswoman lee is one of the nation's most powerful advocates for social justice, housing and economic opportunity. lee was defeated in the primary as schiff and republican steve garvey advanced to the november election. garvey, criticizing the endorsement, saying adam schiff says he looks forward to continuing to work with barbara
