>> news station, this is. news 11. >> good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight on kron 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. a rally held in berkeley this evening in support of the school district. the superintendent of schools faced harsh criticism on capitol hill today. she was confronted with questions concerning allegations of jewish students being harassed repeatedly. kron 4 sarah stinson joins us now with the details. sarah. supporters of the superintendent showed up at old city hall today after the school leader pushed back against representatives in dc who asked or a stream of questions about how the district has handled anti-semitism. >> berkeley community members called this congressional hearing a witch hunt.

>> dozens of parents and community members rallied at the old city hall in berkeley wednesday in support of the superintendent and the kia forte. more thelle. they thought she did an amazing job this morning. more thought was one of 3 school leaders who are grilled by u.s. house republicans about how they're handling a rise in anti-semitism since the conflict erupted between israel and palestine in october. we have. >> teachers that are teaching hate to our kids and showing it students being a feeling fearful for this. >> the u.s. department of education is investigating, be usd over accusations. the district has failed to address, quote, nonstop severe and persistent bullying of jewish students. more thelle defended the district's actions. if we have a concern or complaint about anti-semitism or any form of hate. >> we take it very seriously. we investigate and we take action pending the outcome of that investigate hours after the congressional hearing, community members rallied in support of the district.

people held up signs that read defended berkeley schools and congress fund education, not genocide. liz jackson is a jewish mom of 2 kids in berkeley unified. she and other parents at the rally say they feel education should not be censored. >> we teach them that. it's not safe to talk about genocide on we're in danger ourselves and we're in danger or problem is that the representatives today and many people, parents and community members think that only one perspective should be taught. and the other side is all about terrorism. and that's not right. it's racist. >> back in november, more than 12,000 jewish parents in berkeley community member sent a letter to the districts board of education and superintendent complaining of anti-semitism in unsafe conditions in the classroom. we reached out to some of those parents to get the reaction about today's hearing and then about the rally. they thanked us for covering the hearing, but they were not available to talk today. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you.

>> sarah, thank you. and east bay martial arts studio is vowing to stay open after dealing with repeated vandalism. the owner says he's just trying to share his passion while running a positive business for kids and families in west oakland kron four's dan door is on. this story is live in the newsroom tonight after talking with that studios owner. good evening, good evening. graham with the studio owner says that it's been a frustrating experience. >> having to keep cleaning up in fixing the damage. he says his studio should >> safe and inclusive space, but it's getting targeted by people who want it gone. windows broken and walls painted with graffiti that afro-brazilian martial arts oakland. >> vandalism has become an unfortunate occurrence to side. >> i'm disappointed. because, you know, say i try to understand what i'm doing wrong. >> owner loose of although day olivia era opened the studio

for years ago with the hope of teaching the brazilian art form of capital era. but daily vieira says over time the space is also grown to become a community center for children and families. >> so i created, you know, that's all you need to be able to enjoy the spacing fuel. up next with brazil. >> he says some of the vandalism includes profanity laced complaints about noise. most of the studio's classes do involve music. parents have also expressed concerns today levy era about the damage. so that was stated for me. >> because i want to try to to to always make sure that be there. and i do everything to make sure like the trust me this is going to change. hopefully soon. >> they levy era says he has an idea who might be behind the vandalism but has not been able to prove it. he's grateful to have the support of oakland community who he believes will overcome this adversity. he says they're not

going anywhere. he's going to get that into one of few for and then let's make a nice to get it. they'll by my side in the give up with news. >> oakland community has since put up a mural to beautify the outside of the de la tierra says that he hopes that it will show the vandals that they're not giving up in the newsroom. dan thorn kron, 4 news. >> dan, thank you. it was a warm and pretty windy day in many parts of the bay area. is what it looked like earlier in san jose. a lot of wind going on. indeed, the warm temps and the wind will stick around at least for a while. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here with a look at what we can expect tomorrow. a large. yeah, guys, it kind of go hand in hand right to get those gusty offshore winds. but at the same time, those offshore winds really >> up to crank up the temperatures around the bay area. stay warm even outside right now. some pretty amazing temperatures around the bay area this time. but overall, you can see skies are nice and

clear out toward the golden gate bridge. that's where going to stay overnight. no fog to speak of. check out the temperatures. it's still 67 degrees in san francisco. 66 in oakland, 68 degrees in san jose. 70 in livermore. well, i feel like a summer evening outside 68 in concord and 71 degrees right now in santa rosa. overall, we've got that offshore wind. you can see those winds coming right over the sierra nevada dropping in the central valley. then coming back in the bay area. so that's those offshore winds that will crank up the temperatures. but a little blustery again by early tomorrow morning. there are wind advisories up across parts of the north bay and the east bay. tomorrow morning. some of those wind gust as high as 35 to 45 miles per hour. those winds are expected to subside leave behind lots of sunshine and warm temperatures all the way to the coastline. all right. thanks, lawrence. 2 children had to be taken to the hospital after high levels of carbon monoxide were found at sunrise middle school in san jose today. >> fire crews got a call this morning about several people having a tough time breathing.

they showed up to find elevated levels of carbon monoxide in a classroom. 2 students were taken to the hospital while another 2 were released to their parents. crews found the source of the carbon monoxide and they say they got rid of it. >> the suspect in a double hit and run who led police on a wild pursuit through san francisco has been identified according to police. 54 year-old jefferson, rodney was behind the wheel of a blue and white mustang yesterday when he hit 2 pedestrians, one in the tenderloin, the other a 14 year-old girl in north beach. police chased rodney for about an hour and a half before you finally stopped at green and embarcadero, we're told both people who were hit will be ok, but the teenage girl is still in the hospital with a fractured shoulder and ankle. rodney. it has been booked on multiple charges. >> police in the city are also investigating a suspicious death in the tenderloin. officers say they found the body of a woman near taylor and eddy streets sunday. the medical examiner is calling the death suspicious. no

arrests have been made. the victim's identity has yet to be released. >> kron 4 is your election headquarters. congresswoman barbara lee has officially endorsed adam schiff in the race for senator dianne feinstein's seat. chef made the announcement on social media today. lee lost to him in the primary election. the congressman is going to face a former baseball star and republican steve garvey in the november election. a republican has not won a statewide election in california since 2006. >> happening tomorrow, president biden will be back in the bay for a couple days. he's expected to fly into mountain view tomorrow and friday. he is scheduled to attend to campaign receptions. the president last visited san francisco in february when he went to 2 events to raise money for his campaign. >> coming up, a vacant house fire revealing the long list of issues for an oakland property where residents say they do not feel safe. plus, a portable housing for half moon

the whole. she found cat baby. she took him to the vet and x-ray showed he had a bullet stuck in there. the injury was discovered last month. glenn initially thought babies limp was may be due to a cat fight out on the streets. but now cat needs 2 surgeries, one to get the bullet out the other to repair the lake. >> many people do not have an extra $5,000, you know, laying around for their pet as much as they would want. >> joan quinn, there is a program director for guardian hills, a nonprofit that helps pet owners pay for vet care. quinn says vet bills have skyrocketed since the pandemic. the nonprofit is helping to raise money to cover some of the bill. in the meantime, glenn is keeping baby indoors. >> the fire in oakland has residents calling for more answers and help from officials that erupted yesterday inside an abandoned building at east 8th street near laney college. neighbors

say it has a history of problems and has been an ongoing safety issue for them. no one was injured, but officials say they have responded to other fires at this location in the past. one neighbor who did not want to go on camera says many of them do not feel safe. walking outside anymore. >> then things like filing 3, 1, report. we first reached out to nikki passes office are our supervisor for you know, her office pointed us to a few in the city administrator's office. we've got connected the police captain for area. and we reached out to everyone and we just got no traction. >> he says they have tried working with the owner of the building, but there has not that there hasn't been an improvement. the families of farm workers displaced by the deadly half moon bay shooting will soon have a place to stay. nearly 6 million dollars in funding was approved by leaders this week. >> the money will be used to

buy and install more than 40 manufactured homes for those families. another coastal farm workers, they'll be on 5 acres about a mile south from downtown half moon bay. just by down by highway one. the idea stems from the shooting as well as a 2016 report which highlighted the need to improve the quality availability and affordability of housing for farmworkers in the area. >> a 50 acre housing site in southeast san francisco is moving along. it's being called the sunnydale of the lascaux master plan. so far 222 affordable units have been completed with 75% of them designated as public housing replacement units for sunny deol residents. it's a move state senator scott wiener says is much needed for the south eastern neighborhoods of the city. >> south asian neighbors have been just so neglected for so many years. you know, we did need said, and i think it is. and we're seeing much more

focus on the needs of this community. it is an essential part of san francisco, the fabric of our city. >> the ground floor of the project is expected to have a grocery store and early child education center as well as a boys and girls club house. the new bill is trying to make housing more affordable for teachers. california representative eric swalwell from the east bay says >> the bill will provide a 2 full-time public school educators and school staff who are first time home buyers. this bill would help provide teachers with some of the resources they need to afford homes in the neighborhoods where they teach. >> let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look at sfo tonight. anyone coming in this week are being treated with some warm, wonderful weather. and this is when you visit here and you're like we should move. lawrence is back with the forecast is getting warmer and warmer large. yeah, it really is the next couple days. watch the peak of the heat. this high

pressure kind of settles in overhead. we've got some great days ahead. if you've been looking forward to some nice, warm weather, going to get even more. so in the next couple of days, those temperatures are going to soar upper 80's. maybe even a couple low 90's would be shocked to see that pop up over the next couple days to but >> clears can be out along the coast right now as we've got that offshore wind that continues to kick in is going to stay that way overnight. tonight we're going to get gusty in spots inland, but otherwise leave behind plenty of sunshine. they're going to start a cooling trend. we may actually see some fog move in as we head toward a lot of the day tomorrow. but right now we're looking at that nice northerly component, the wind outside. that's keeping your skies. nice and clear. not only here, but all across california. a very intriguing overnight tonight. those offshore winds kind of wrapping up that will keep your skies clear toward the coastline tomorrow morning. but watch what happens as we get toward the afternoon. all of a sudden late in the day start to see little suddenly component win. there's a little fog beginning show up along the coastline late in the afternoon. but other than that, we've got a lot of sunshine. very nice temperatures coming our way.

so before that fog starts to roll in about 82 degrees. the marina tomorrow. 73 golden gate park. 78 downtown san francisco along the coastline. 60's. even a couple low 70's there as we head toward the afternoon. so inside the bay of find some warm temperatures to mid 70's in the millbrae and burlingame down the peninsula. very, very nice weather, 70's and 80's out there. boy and i used to some of these warm temperatures. be careful on that heat tomorrow is going to feel a pretty toasty out there in spots. 89 degrees in milpitas about 88 in santa clara, it 7 in san jose. i think you're in the upper 80's tomorrow afternoon into the tri valley about 85 degrees in hayward. 87 in union city. 85 degrees in moraga. 84 berkeley and 87 degrees in conquer. so windy in spots tomorrow morning. but after that, that wind is going to subside behind some warm temperatures just about everywhere you go. 78 in mill valley about 83 in petaluma next couple days. those temperatures, yeah. running hot inland. we may begin to watch these begin to cool, especially as we get to friday

along the coastline. more cooling as we head in toward the holiday weekend. mom's day, of course. coming up, it looks like it's going to be nice. but the fog is going to be moving along the coastline with much cooler weather over the saturday and sunday. so be prepared for that, ok? so just layer up, if you're going somewhere with my lair up. yeah, are some nice coffee or some hot chocolate off you go or as we like to say. whatever she was. whatever was. that's the idea this weekend. thanks. thanks. >> santa rosa police have released a photo of a pickup truck connected to a hit and run last month that left a motorcyclist severely injured at the intersection of poplar avenue. an airway drive. police believe it's a gray f-one 50 model between 2004 2008 with a parent stickers in the top driver side corner of the windshield. distinctive black rams. no front license plate their summer. taylor fog lamps on this vehicle and ace and silver sidesteps as well. the age gender and race of the driver is still unknown. if

you have information, you're asked to contact santa rosa police. the man was arrested last night for causing a small grass fire in sandra fell. take a look at the damage. this is on crest away. >> in that era, linda neighborhood, people in the area reported hearing an explosion of some kind before a fire started behind their apartment complex. investigators say the 54 year-old guy responsible set off homemade fireworks. he was later arrested all fireworks, by the way, are prohibited in marin county. >> eastbound highway. 37 between delay and sonoma county will be closed again this weekend for repaving. that work will start friday at 10:00pm. those roads are expected to reopen monday at 05:00am. >> it's a rare sight, but the a's and rangers play to double header coliseum. both teams had their offense is in high gear. jason let us know what
