name to add san francisco to it. how city officials say they could help rename the airport to something else. and gusty winds begin to pick up around the bay area. but those same winds, they are going break up the temperatures. >> yeah. get ready for the hottest temperatures so far this year forecast is coming. >> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> rally held in berkeley tonight in support of the school district. good evening. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. the berkeley superintendent of schools face some harsh criticism on capitol hill today. fielding questions concerning allegations of jewish students being harassed. kron 4 sarah stinson joins us now live in the studio with some details on that. sarah. >> supporters of the superintendent showed up at the old city hall today while the school leader pushed back

against representatives in dc as they asked her a stream of questions about how the district has handled anti-semitism, berkeley community members at this rally called congressional the ressional hearing a witch hunt. >> dozens of parents and community members rallied at the old city hall in berkeley wednesday in support of the superintendent and the kia forte. more thelle. i'm here with everyone else to show support for our superintendent berkeley unified school district. i thought she did an amazing job this morning. more thought was one of 3 school leaders who are grilled by u.s. house republicans about how they're handling a rise in anti-semitism since the conflict erupted between israel and palestine. in october. we have. >> teachers that are teaching hate to our kids and showing it students being a feeling fearful for this. do they are? they found transfer to another school the u.s. department of education is investigating. be usd over accusations. the district has failed to

address, quote, nonstop severe and persistent bullying of jewish students. more thelle defended the district's actions. if we have a concern or complaint about anti-semitism or any form of hate. >> we take it very seriously. we investigate and we take action pending the outcome of that investigate hours after the congressional hearing, community members rallied in support of the district. people held up signs that read defended berkeley schools and congress fund education, not genocide. and the fact that headlines. >> covering the headlines, this liz jackson is a jewish mom of 2 kids in berkeley unified. she and other parents at the rally say they feel education should not be censored. >> we teach them that. it's not safe to talk about genocide on we're in danger ourselves and we're in danger.

problem is that their representatives today and many people, parents%and community members think that only one perspective should be taught. and the other side is all about terrorism. and that's not right. it's racist. >> and back in november, more than 12,000 jewish parents in berkeley community member sent a letter to the district's board of education and superintendent complaining of anti-semitism and unsafe conditions in the classroom. we reached out to some of those parents to get the reaction about today's hearing in raleigh. but we did not hear back in time for this report. i'm sara stinson reporting the studio. back to thank you, sarah. despite a growing protest encampment on the cal campus. >> uc berkeley officials say this year's graduation ceremony set for this saturday is still happening. coming up at 10 15, how the school says it will be handling that situation. >> was a windy day in many parts of the bay area today. so what it looked like a little earlier in san jose, the wind is expected to continue. kron four's lawrence

karnow joins us now to let us know when it's going to let up. yeah, those winds going to whip. in fact, you're going to be intensifying overnight tonight, especially in parts of the bay area. you get over the north bay hills. >> parts of the east bay, some gusty winds developing out there already that offshore flow. it is same thing that's responsible for all the beautiful weather we had today and the beautiful weather. we have to come still. you can see those winds as they work their way across the sierra nevada. high pressure trying to build in and that is creating the offshore wind. the same time we're seeing some gusty winds developing now in parts of the north bay. some of those gusts 30 miles an hour or so across atlas, peak little less down below in some of the valleys. but going to see those winds picking up throughout the night tonight into early tomorrow morning and maybe some of those gusts could be as high as 35 to 45 miles per hour. so a pretty pretty blustery start today. if you're traveling, they're expecting some of the comeback that wind advisory in effect till 08:00am. now after that, things begin to calm down and that's when the temperatures well, they start to heat right up numbers in the upper 80's

by tomorrow afternoon, the valleys. how about 81 degrees in san francisco? maybe even 70 out of the beach in half moon bay. thank you, lawrence. new at 10 tonight, an east bay martial arts studio is vowing to stay open. >> after dealing with repeated vandalism, the owner says he's just trying to share his passion while running a passion while running a positive business for kids an families in west oakland on first-and thorn in our newsroom after talking with that studio owner can. the studios owner says it's been a frustrating experience having to keep cleaning up in fixing the damage. he says his studio should safe and inclusive space, but it's getting targeted by people who want to god. >> windows broken and walls painted with graffiti that afro-brazilian martial arts oakland vandalism has become an unfortunate occurrence to side. >> i'm disappointed. because, you know, say i try to understand what i'm doing wrong. >> owner loose of although day

olivia era opened the studio for years ago with the hope of teaching the brazilian art form of capital era. but daily vieira says over time the space is also grown to become a community center for children and families. >> so i created in, oh, that's cool. you need to be able to enjoy the spacing fuel. up next with brazil. >> he says some of the vandalism includes profanity laced complaints about noise. most of the studio's classes do involve music. parents have also expressed concerns today levy era about the damage. so that was stated me. >> because i want to try to to to always make sure that be there. and i do everything to make sure like the trust me this is going to change. hopefully soon. >> they levy era says he has an idea who might be behind the vandalism but has not been able to prove it. he's grateful to have the support of oakland community who he

believes will overcome this adversity. he says they're not going anywhere. he's going to get that into one of few possible for and then let's make a nice to get deal by my side in youth up with ease. >> oakland community, a sense. put up a mural to beautify the outside of the studio. daily vieira says that he's hoping that will show the vandals they are not giving up in the newsroom. dan thorn kron, 4 news. thank you, dan. 2 children had to be taken to the hospital after high levels of carbon. >> monoxide were found at sunrise middle school in san jose. fire crews say that they got a call this morning about several people on campus having a hard time breathing crews were able to find where the carbon monoxide was coming from and they got rid of it. police in san leandro are looking for a shooting suspect after a driver was found dead in a car crash. >> investigators say they found a driver with a gunshot wound in that car crash sunday night on benedict drive near

5.80, skaters say they believe the shooting happened in the same area just before the crash. anyone who has any information is asked to call san leandro police in san francisco. police are investigating a suspicious death in the tenderloin. officers say that they found the body of a woman in the area of taylor and eddy streets on sunday. the medical examiner has determined the death suspicious. no arrests have been made. the victim's identity has yet to be released. president biden is expected to be back in san francisco tomorrow. he's set to attend to campaign receptions on friday. the president last visited san francisco in february when he also attended reelection campaigns. then. >> google will be leaving one market plaza in san francisco when its lease expires. a google spokesperson confirming with kron 4. the company will be moving out of one markets, spirit tower later this year. but we'll continue to occupy one markets landmark building. google says that employees who

were based in one market spirit, how are going to be moved to their other nearby san francisco buildings. >> the new bill is aiming to make housing more affordable for teachers. california congressman eric swalwell says the bill will provide aid to full-time public school educators and school staff who are first-time home buyers. the bill aims to help provide teachers with some of the resources they need to afford homes in the neighborhoods where they teach more than 200 affordable units are being built in a southeast. san francisco, a move state senator scott wiener says >> is much needed for the that part of the city. >> south asian neighbors have been just so neglected for so many years. you know, we did need said, and i think it is. and we're seeing much more focus on the needs. this community is an essential part of san francisco. the fabric of our city. >> the ground floor of the

handle it. that's the message tonight from university which is pushing forward with graduation plans this weekend. despite that growing protest encampment on the campus. our grant is here to tell us why uc berkeley is not canceling commtncement like other prominent schools grant and a colombian. i us see the bottom line is cau leaders feel like they often deal with protesters in are able to deal with whatever may come their way this weekend. lots of parents have been coming into town the past couple of days ready to celebrate. graduation is on. it will be saturday morning as scheduled at memorial stadium. graduates will get 4 tickets for, you know, their supporters in the crowd and similar protocols to football games will be in place. no backpacks, no banners, no signs. and there is a clear bag policy. the school says it's ready and it values the importance of growing through with graduation.

>> graduates, their friends in the family and their families. should be able to enjoy one of the most meaningful days in their lives. we haven't made any changes in our plans, but we understand that there is a possibility of disruption this year, like every year in the past. >> and likely not to be like every year in the past. tents are still set up at sproul plaza. and student protesters are still calling on uc berkeley to divest from israel. school spokesperson there says cal is not divesting and there will be no academic boycott of israel. according to the university negotiations between protesters and administrators are still happening. but no agreement has been reached to end. what is now a 3 week tent encampment there? we'll keep you posted. vicki and ken, back to you. >> all right, president biden is pausing the shipments of bombs to israel as that country prepares. it's possible military action in rafah. the president has repeatedly said that he is

opposed israel and baiting the city in southern gaza. the shipment was said to include about 3500 bombs this week, israeli forces took control of the rafah border crossing into egypt and ordered the evacuation of about 100,000 people and stay with kron 4 on air and online for all the latest information on the israel and hamas war from the cease-fire talks to campus protests and more head to our website kron 4 dot com back here at home. neighbors in oakland are calling for more answers after several fires started at an abandoned home near lady college. >> kron four's lezla gooden tells us neighbors fear it could get worse. >> more than 60 firefighters from the oakland fire department battled with this apartment building on tuesday at east 8th street. nearly college. the fire left the apartment like this full of debris and damaged. another home decided displacing a family. officials say no one was injured, but they have reported to other fires here

zone forecast to a live look at the city all lit yeah. looks really great out there tonight. more times outside in the city it was almost balmy. yeah. need a jacket. yeah. temperatures in the 70's in the late in the evening. so. >> all around the bay area, high pressure overhead. you're getting those offshore winds and well, these temperatures staying very mild feel like summer outside. right now we're going to see a nice clear night around the bay area even along the coast line is we've got those offshore winds in effect throughout the night tonight and tomorrow to although late in the day, we may just begin to see a couple of patches of fog move back in long. the senate he'll coastline. but overall, we're looking at some beautiful weather head, get out there and enjoy these temperatures. jumped quite a bit today as much as a 14, 15 degrees warmer around parts of the bay area. but we'll see it even warmer than that by tomorrow afternoon. highs topping well above the average after being way below the average this last weekend. now you're talking 83 for a high in santa rosa, 80 in concord. 78 in livermore, 81 warmer and san jose. 81 in oakland and 76

degrees in san francisco. so here it is. you can see the wind pattern out there right now. more that northerly wind, that offshore wind just really kind of set itself up for tonight that you keep your skies nice and clear. it will also lead to some very warm temperatures around the bay area as we head in toward tomorrow on. expect that is that offshore wind keeping really the entire state, a clear of any clouds outside right now. that's going to be the case. high pressure building overhead for at least another day tomorrow. yeah, we'll see these numbers up. getting close to 90 degrees getting an ear hopped in some spots. well inland, warm inside the bay even along the coastline. we may actually see a couple numbers. the can low 70's by tomorrow afternoon. so really looking at some very nice weather ahead. downtown san francisco tomorrow. that's a very warm day for san francisco, 80 degrees. sunny, warm 84 degrees in oakland about 86 degrees in san jose. really all around the bay area. some nice numbers over the next couple days. we may see some of those temperatures actually topping out in the low 90's inland by friday, while the coastline should

begin to cool friday afternoon, cooler weather expected for the weekend. >> we all know that sounds starting next month. gas-powered leaf blowers will be banned in emeryville. officials say the equipment caused air and noise pollution, which has a negative health effect. the city is recommending residents switch over to electric leaf blowers. berkeley, oakland and other bay area cities have similar bans. 29 trees planted today in san jose's business district mayor matt mahan says that the concrete that surrounds businesses in the area >> can turn away foot traffic because, you know, the pavement temperatures rise and it scares people off while he says planting trees are going to help cool down the neighborhood. >> the business association, this neighborhood literally feels the >> raising concerns last year about heisler impacting their day-to-day lives and activities. we're all of us.

>> new at 10 police in the north bay are looking for a man they say tried to stab someone with a knife. the attack happened last tuesday in healdsburg in the parking lot of the city's community center. they say that the victim was just sitting in their car when they saw this damien osorio, slashing tires in the area. when the victim got out of the car, they say, oh, tried to stab them. the victim did get away. but with a cut on their hand. so rio is facing several charges, including attempted murder. if you see him, you're being asked to give healdsburg police a call. the fbi is warning about criminals targeting victims with artificial say the cyber criminals are using ai. >> to clone voice and video of family members to try to convince potential victims to give out sensitive information. the fbi says you should stay vigilant and always be aware of urgent messages asking for money or

>> now to answer any questions remain about a potential steering malfunction on electric vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a family of 4 in pleasanton last month as kron four's. dan kerman reports for us tonight. there've been several complaints filed with federal regulators over steering issues. >> it was 2 weeks ago when a family of 4 was killed on foothill road near stone ridge drive when the vehicle they were driving, lost control, hit a pole and then crashed into a tree before bursting into flames. the vehicle in question vinfast a new entry into the electric vehicle market. now an unidentified person is filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration or nitsa describing what appears to be this crash and complaining about the car's steering system. the complaint seems to come from the owner of the 2023 vinfast vf 8 who admits to having steering

problems before loaning the card to a co-worker who died in the crash. the complaint says the steering wheel automatically maneuver to the right direction. however, the contact was able to regain control of the steering wheel and maneuvered into the correct lane. the contact stated the failure recurred where the lane assist was turned on by default and it would automatically move the steering wheel. the contact was concerned that the failure recurred while the co-worker was driving. that raises questions about the vehicles, lane assist feature the way these link keeping assist systems generally work. >> is you have a camera that's mountain behind the wind above the mirror. typically that's looking forward. looking looking ahead at the road and it's looking for the lane lines. the lane markings. and then i'm sending that signal. it certainly recognizes the land markings will send that signal electronic control unit in the vehicle that is tied to

your steering. sam abuelsamid is an auto industry analyst with guidehouse insights. he says it's not unusual for an automaker to have issues when they launch a new vehicle, especially. >> when it has new features and technology, it's designed to keep you in the land. however, you know, the all need to be calibrated properly. the camera needs to be calibrated the steering and believed to be calibrated and it could be that what's happening with these been fast vehicles is that the cameras not properly calibrated. and so it sinks that the cars in a position where it's not that it's a website includes a total of 9 complaints about the 2023 vinfast vf. 8, 3 citing steering problems. will now investigate. but experts say not to expect any action any time soon. >> it can take a long time before they take any action. sometimes years. kron four's reached out to vinfast for comment but did not hear back the cause of the pleasanton

crash remains under investigation. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> in the north bay, santa rosa, police are looking for a pickup truck connected to a hit and run last month at center motorcycle driver to the hospital. it was at the intersection of hopper avenue and airway drive. take a look. police believe that the truck here, it's a gray ford f one, 50 model between the years 2004 2008 with the parents stickers in the top drivers side corner of the windshield. there also distinctive black rims, no front license plate. rectangle fog lamps and a silver sidestepped. a anyone information is being asked to contact santa rosa police. i can. owner in east palo alto is now facing thousands of dollars in veterinary bills after discovering that her cat had been shot. >> something on the side and that this is broken it right here. see it. >> the owner showed us the whole. she says she found in

her cat named baby. she took cat to the vet and an x-ray show. in fact, he had a bullet inside of him. the bullet was discovered last month and now baby needs 2 surgeries. one remove the bullet. the other repairs leg. the nonprofit is helping pay for some of those medical bills. >> many people do not have an extra $5,000, you know, laying around for their pet as much as they would want. >> the search for the shooter continues. in the meantime, the owner says she's keeping baby indoors. samara fell. police say they arrested a man for starting a vegetation fire with homemade fireworks. take a look at the damage on crest away. and the terra linda neighborhood, residents in the area reported hearing an explosion before fire started behind their apartment complex. a nevada man was later reminder here that all fireworks are prohibited in marin county out of the 4 zone forecast as we step outside and give you a live look at

the bucky ball outside exploratorium on the park. you know, one of those rare evenings, lawrence, you just walk outside. it's kind of warm. there's that said, it really even in san francisco, some of the temperatures still holding up in the 70's, if you can believe that. but >> we start to see these offshore winds blowing. well, that changes everything around the bay area. we're going to be basking in sunshine and even warmer temperatures by tomorrow afternoon. fact, some places felt numbers like this may feel hot to by tomorrow afternoon. so be prepared for that. keep a lot of fluids with you. get ready to go, get those t-shirts out there. it is going to be yeah. pretty warm around much of the bay area overnight tonight. skies going to stay clear. those winds will be gusty at times overnight tonight, especially in the north and parts of the east bay. tomorrow, sunday, all the way to coastline, going to be warm to even out toward the beaches before we may see a few patches of fog move in late in the day and this weekend will notice the cooling trend underway. you'll see the cool fog. we've already swept along the coastline by friday into the weekend. that will start to cool down. the temperatures with takes a while for the interior valleys. cool down.

all right. here's the very latest. temperatures outside is 52 degrees in half moon bay. but check out san francisco. still 70 degrees outside. 72 in alameda, 70 in fairfield and a 68 degrees in snow. most a really nice temperatures all around the bay area courtesy of these offshore winds that sinking air warming things up outside. and that's where we sit now. so these temperatures not going to be all that cold overnight tonight. we're going to be off and running with some very warm weather as we head throughout the day tomorrow. winds to are going to be with and i think strongest in the morning. then by the afternoon it will begin to subside. but before then you could see some 40 plus mile an hour gust in some of the interior valleys in the north bay and the east bay. all right. let's talk temperatures tomorrow. how about a downtown temperature of 79 degrees in san francisco. 82 in the mission about 73 golden gate park. boy, it's going to be one of those really nice days up toward the beach, especially in the early part of the day about 71 in half moon bay. 69 over not about 69. also in daly city. so you had the beach not be prepared to late in the day. may just begin to see some fog creeping along

the coastline. otherwise inside the bay, staying clear all day long. 75 in millbrae. 76 degrees and sunny in burlingame. well, he's numbers looking nice, nice and warm. if you've been looking forward to some more, whether this is 83 degrees in mount view. 82 in redwood city in palo alto, the south bay filled with mid to upper 80's in most spots there by tomorrow afternoon. maybe 88 in santa clara about 89 getting close to hot there in livermore. 89 in pleasanton about 85 in hayward. 86 in san leandro 84 degrees in richmond. those temperatures pretty toasty out there. windy in the morning parts of the north and the east bay. then that wind subsides in the afternoon leave behind some very, very warm temperatures out there. so here's your tenet and those temperatures stay warm. maybe a little hot. so friday, at least inland that everybody starts to cool down ever so slowly as we head in toward the mother's day weekend. looks like those temperatures staying up, though, out toward the middle of next week as well. and here we have been some research talking 70 at 10. 35 at night in san francisco. it's 70 in las vegas right now. yeah,

it's 61 in san diego. yeah. that year. we could see temperatures, you know, along the coastline. usually see. those are some of the valleys. but right when you get those offshore winds that brings all that warm air right back. >> into san francisco announced yeah, it's pretty nice. it's nice. i think for there's another twist in the showdown between san francisco and oakland over the plans. renaming of oakland's airport oakland wants to rename it airport. san francisco bay, oakland airport, but san francisco leaders say that that would be trademark infringement and they can help collaborate on a new fresno. well, bellow alive in the newsroom with the ongoing a lawsuit and drama over this name change will wears ago and now no. well, the drama continues. vicki, the offer to talk this out is happening on the eve of the final vote on the name change. oakland officials are set to finalize that name change tomorrow. >> whether san francisco likes it or not. the port of oakland sea is nothing wrong with adding san francisco bay to

its airport name. but the city of san francisco has filed a federal lawsuit saying the new name would cause confusion and chaos for travelers. city attorney david chiu is now offering to collaborate with oakland on a more appropriate name change. but that effort seems to be going nowhere. >> we have been off rain for weeks since oakland first proposed this renaming and unfortunately oakland has continued to rebuff our which is extremely disappointing. we've been concerned that the renaming is going to create immense confusion and chaos for travelers, particularly those who do not read or speak english. we're worried about travelers who are going to miss flights and our hope had been to be able to sit down and talk with them and consider alternative names that would meet their goals but not infringe on our trademark. >> now, 2 wouldn't give specifics, but he says they're they have several alternative name ideas that they'd like to
