continue at u c berkeley. the university's commencement. it's still scheduled for this saturday morning. this while other universities have already canceled theirs because of the student protests. thank you for joining us here in companies at 5. i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus. according to the university negotiations between protesters and administrators are still happening. but no agreement has been reached in terms of when they were might end this. now 3 week tent encampment kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with some one leading the in camp and he joins us live from sproul plaza. good evening, rob. granda. well, tents are still up behind sproul plaza and protesters are still calling on uc berkeley to divest from israel. i notice a lot of parents walking around campus today, 3 days away from >> uc berkeley is moving ahead with plans to hold commencement saturday at california memorial stadium. thousands of undergraduates

limited to 4 tickets, each for guests and similar protocols to football games. no backpacks, no banners or signs and a clear bag policy. uc berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof expect there to be protesters calling for a cease-fire in gaza for many years. >> commencement ceremonies that uc berkeley have been the site of protests for all sorts of reasons and causes. and so this is something we're familiar with. >> we haven't made any changes in our plans, but we understand that there is a possibility of disruption this year, like every year in the past. >> the tent encampment at sproul plaza continues to grow. humm-mhm moon is one of the organizers and would not comment on if there are protests planned during commencement but says students are prepared to continue demonstrations until uc berkeley agrees to divest money from israel. that's what we're focused the uc >> its our responsibility people like night. uc berkeley continues to be in talks to the protest leaders. but mobile office says there are

it students being a feeling fearful for this. >> still ahead tonight, berkeley unified superintendent was among the school district leaders grilled on capitol hill today about claims of anti-semitism. we'll have that full report coming up tonight on kron. 4 news at 5.30. >> questions tonight about whether a stee ing malfunction on the electric vehicle was responsible for a crash that killed a family of 4 in pleasanton last month as kron four's dan kerman reports. there have been several complaints filed with federal regulators over searing issues with the vinfast vehicle. >> it was 2 weeks ago when a family of 4 was killed on foothill road near stone ridge drive when the vehicle they were driving, lost control, hit a pole and then crashed into a tree before bursting into flames. the vehicle in question vinfast a new entry into the electric vehicle market. now an unidentified person is filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration or nitsa describing what

appears to be this crash and complaining about the car's steering system. the complaint seems to come from the owner of the 2023 vinfast vf 8 who admits to having steering problems before loaning the card to a co-worker who died in the crash. the complaint says the steering wheel automatically maneuver to the right direction. however, the contact was able to regain control of the steering wheel and maneuvered into the correct lane. the contact stated the failure recurred where the lane assist was turned on by default and it would automatically move the steering wheel. the contact was concerned that the failure recurred while the co-worker was driving. that raises questions about the vehicles, lane assist feature the way these link keeping assist systems generally work. >> is you have a camera that's mountain behind the wind above the mirror. typically that's looking forward. looking looking ahead at the road and it's looking for the lane lines. the lane markings. and

then i'm sending that signal. it certainly recognizes the land markings will send that signal electronic control unit in the vehicle that is tied to your steering. sam abuelsamid is an auto industry analyst with guidehouse insights. he says it's not unusual for an automaker to have issues when they launch a new vehicle, especially. >> when it has new features and technology, it's designed to keep you in the land. however, you know, the all need to be calibrated properly. the camera needs to be calibrated the steering and will need to be calibrated and it could be that what's with these been fast vehicles is that the cameras not properly calibrated. and so it's thinks that the cars in a position where it's not that it's a website includes a total of 9 complaints about the 2023 vinfast vf. 8, 3 citing steering problems. will now investigate. but experts say not to expect any action any

time soon. >> it can take a long time before they take any action. sometimes years. kron four's reached out to vinfast for comment but did not hear back the cause of the pleasanton crash remains under investigation. dan kerman kron. 4 news. the suspect in a double hit and run who led police on a wild pursuit through san francisco has been identified according to police. >> 54 year-old jefferson, rodney was behind the wheel of a blue and white mustang yesterday when he hit 2 pedestrians. one in the tenderloin, the other a 14 year-old girl in north beach. police chase, rodney. they say for about an hour and a half before he finally stopped at green and embarcadero here, we're told both people who are hit will be okay eventually physically. but the teenage girl is still in the hospital with a fractured shoulder and ankle rodney's been booked on multiple charges. new at 5

santa rosa police have released a picture of a pickup truck connected to a hit and run last month. that severely injured a motorcyclist. this is at the intersection of hopper avenue and airway drive. police believe it is a gray ford f one, 50 between 2004 2008 with a parent stickers near the top drivers side corner of the windshield. also, they say it has distinctive black rims, no front license plate. rectangle, fog lamps and a silver side step the age, gender and race of the driver still unknown anyone with info here is asked to contact santa rosa police. and 2 children had to be taken to the hospital after high levels of carbon monoxide were found at sunrise middle school in san jose today. fire crews say they got a call this morning about several people having a tough time breathing when they showed up. they say they found elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the classroom. 2 students were taken to the hospital while another 2 were released to their parents.

the bay. >> gorgeous weather all the way. the coastline, lots of sunshine today. temperatures really heating up outside and probably going to do even a little bit more in the next couple of days out the door as nice as can be all the way. the golden gate bridge, the coastline. we are fog free outside. that's the way it is going to stay temperatures. yeah, we're 73 degrees right now in san francisco. warm 75 in oakland. your to 80 degrees right now in san jose. 77 liberate e in concord in 81 degrees in santa rosa. so high pressure taking over head and has a builds in. we've seen that northeasterly wind kicking in that offshore flow. so we have had some blustery winds outside something to watch out for as we head through the night again tonight. still a breezy in spots out there. right now. the winds have backed off a little bit, but i think they'll pick right back up again overnight tonight. so a high wind advisory in effect until 08:00am on thursday morning. parts of the napa valley also up in the mountain tops as well and towards county. expect some gusty winds of 35 45 miles per hour.

all right, lawrence, the families of farm workers displaced by the deadly half moon bay shooting. >> we'll soon have a better place to stay. nearly 6 million dollars will be going towards building affordable housing for them and other coastal farm workers. san mateo county leaders unanimously approved the funding yesterday. it will be used to buy and install more than 40 manufactured homes will be on 5 acres about a mile from downtown half moon bay, just south of highway one. the idea stems from the shooting and from a report don't in 2016 which highlighted the need to improve the quality availability and affordability of housing for farmworkers in the area. the project, though, is still in the permitting process. >> a 50 acre site in southeast san francisco is moving along. it's being called the sunnydale glasgow master plan. so far, 222 affordable housing units have been completed there with 75% of them

>> there >> is another twist in the showdown between san francisco and oakland over the planned renaming of oakland airport. it's and 11th hour offer by san francisco to collaborate on a new name in order to avoid litigation. oakland, as we've been reporting, wants to rename its airport, san francisco bay oakland airport. but san francisco says that would be trademark

infringement and they've sued about this kron four's catherine heenan. >> is live in the newsroom with the latest. so a little last-ditch effort yeah. another last-ditch effort to the latest last ditch >> they offered to talk. this site is happening on the eve of a final vote on the name change. oakland officials apparently set to finalize the name change tomorrow. whether san francisco likes it or not. the argument the port of oakland says nothing wrong with adding san francisco to oakland airport's name the city of san francisco doesn't agree. it's already filed a federal lawsuit saying that new name would only cause confusion and chaos. i asked city attorney david chiu about today's offered to collaborate which so far seems to be going nowhere. he says it's not though they haven't been tried. >> we have been off rain for weeks since oakland first proposed this renaming and unfortunately oakland has continued to rebuff our which

is extremely disappointing. we've been concerned that the renaming is going to create immense confusion and chaos for travelers, particularly those who do not read or speak english. we're worried about travelers who are going to miss flights and our hope had been to be able to sit down and talk with them and consider alternative names that would meet their goals but not infringe on our trademark. >> 2 would not give me specifics, but he says they have a lot of alternative ideas to offer oakland on a new name. oakland clearly doesn't seem interested and has been talking about getting positive feedback on the name change from customers. chew says it was a completely cooked survey. >> we had a chance finally to take a look at their so-called customer survey. and it was riddle with all sorts of issues. it was essentially a survey that push respondents toward the answers that they wanted. it didn't give them the direct choice. from our perspective, we think any reasonable person. here's a

name. san francisco international airport next to san francisco bay, oakland international airport. well understand how clearly similar those 2 names are and the likely confusion that those names will create. and that's a standard for a clear infringement case. >> a spokesperson for the oakland airport says that letter from david shoe with the they offered to collaborate will be shared by the oakland port commissioner before tomorrow's board meeting. no other comment. however, on that, david chu says if nothing changes tomorrow, san francisco will press on with the lawsuit and ask for a preliminary injunction in the case. noel. >> interesting, again to have her. thank you. after nearly 12 hours of work, a water main break in richmond has been fixed. 21 homes were affected by this break at south 47th street and carlson boulevard. it happened around 05:00am this morning and sent

thousands of gallons of water rushing down the street making area look almost like a river east bay mud said water should now be restored to all of the homes affected. a fire in oakland has residents calling for more answers and help from officials, the abandoned building that went up in flames has a history of problems, according to neighbors and they fear it could get worse. kron four's lezla gooden has more. more than 60 firefighters from the oakland fire department battled with this apartment building on tuesday. >> at east 8th street, nearly college. the fire left the apartment like this full of debris and damaged. another home decided displacing a family. officials say no one was injured, but they have reported to other fires here in the past. >> well, that's one the building

>> residents in the neighborhood tell us the building has been ongoing safety issue for them. this house has been a huge issue for the block for. i think close to 5 years at this point, the first fires in 2019. >> squatters moved shortly after that. and it's been constant problems ever sense. one neighbor who did not was she go on camera says. >> many of them don't feel safe. walking outside in the morning. we've then things like filing 3, 1, report. we first reached out to nikki passes office are our supervisor for you know, her office pointed us to a few in the city administrator's office. >> we've got connected the police captain for area. and we reached out to everyone and we just got no traction. this neighbor has been living here for 10 years and tells us they have tried working with owner of the building, but there hasn't been any improvement.

coastline and looking good out toward the beaches. some of those temperatures there along the coast tomorrow, maybe in the low 70's. so there you go. of course, the heat. you start to think about some fires. here's fire forecast model. you can see things are slightly elevated across parts of the interior valleys. that's because the heat and the gusty winds not severe like we get late in the season. but something to watch out for as we head on through by tomorrow. you see those gusty winds in the morning causing some issues. then by the afternoon, little sea breeze going to kick in. that's going to raise humidity. and of course, decrease. the fire danger, too up there. right now, though, we've got that nice offshore wind. you can see winds traveling right over the sierra nevada than seeking in the central valley making their way back in the bay area as they do. they begin to subside compressed. they start to heat up and that's why we get these warm temperatures. that's exactly what we're seeing outside now, more that on the way overnight. tonight, east bay. you can see some winds now say leland, 26 mile an hour gust. the outfield 30 mile an hour gust atlas peak

31 miles. now those likely to ramp up overnight tonight, those areas probably gusting 40, maybe 45 miles per hour. so overall, the pattern. boy, fantastic. you have lots of sunshine, beautiful weather all the way. the coastline will be windy at times specially tomorrow morning. but by the afternoon, those winds kind of back off a bit. i mean, we're enjoying beautiful weather. nice weather the year so far tomorrow you're hanging out the beach. temperatures in the 70's, of course, the waters, little chillier in the 50's. so watch out for he's here to go to the grocery store now for you. yeah, easier for me to get out. because my good friend dave. yeah, he's he's for smiles for me. not. he's turned around quite a bit since the middle of winter friday. so is the weather. so is the weather that unite all about the weather? thanks, lawrence. thanks, guys. up next, the story of resilience after this cat survives a after this cat survives a gunshot. >> a pet owner in east palo alto is now facing thousands of dollars in veterinary bills after discovering her cat had been shot. really awful. kron four's gayle ong joins us in the studio with this story. this kind of hard to believe, gayle. >> yeah, a grant and noelle, the vet bill overwhelming for the pet owner. the cat is overdue for surgery to remove a bullet and fix his broken leg. >> something on the side and that this is broken it right here. see it shot. a glenn is showing us the whole she found in her cat baby or took him into the bet and we have x-ray scheduled they found a bullet x-ray images showing that bullet inside the cat. and is

the lead. the bone right here. >> that's broken. the injury was discovered last month. glenn initially thought it was from a cat fight at the time. a police report has been filed. >> glenn says her cat was shot somewhere near lincoln avenue and east bayshore road in east palo alto. don't know if it was intentional. i don't know if it was a stray. >> but you know, he has an inside needs to be removed. glenn was told baby needs 2 surgeries, one to remove the bullet and the other to repair his leg. >> the vet bill worth over $5,000 and many people do not have an extra $5,000, you know, laying around for their pet as much as they would want. john quinn is a program director for guardian heels, a nonprofit that helps pet owners pay for veterinary care who cannot afford it. we investigated along with showing a number of different hospitals to see. >> where we could find the best care at the best price. and yes, it is expensive. a part of it is. that's 2
