they're continuing to press forward here in the bay area. >> with students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to help building just like painting a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be i wasn't. it's not happening with the government. >> at >> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students is on day 8 of a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. even that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but what im pilots and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a counter-protester violated

>> meanwhile, campus operations at ucla are expected to resume in full tomorrow. classes have been remote after violence broke out on campus tuesday night. more than 200 people were also arrested early thursday morning. now critics of the university's police chief saying that he did not do enough to help keep students safe during the chaos. chris wolfe has the latest. >> officers coming firework. the fireworks. >> always john fenoglio reported from the front lines tuesday evening when counter-protesters described by some simply as a mob launched an attack on an expansive pro-palestinian encampment set up in the heart of ucla. >> according to reports,

authorities did not respond properly to handle the melee for 3 in some witnesses tell ktla when officers did arrive, they were slow to enter the fray. now the la times is quoting sources as saying ucla police chief john thomas is facing growing scrutiny for how his department handled the violence that evening. >> the article mentions serious security lapses and explains the thomases. sure. university leadership on the morning before the and he could mobilize course is quote, in minutes. but thomas is denying those allegations declaring he did everything possible to provide security and protect students. just a shame that we've come to this point where >> jewish students feel like they can't. they're unsafe on campus where obviously there's a lot of parents suffering in the middle east right now. and i think that there's a lot of people that don't really quite understand the the complexity of this conflict that dates

back. not just 75 years, but thousands of years. >> and new this morning, police in riot gear cleared out an encampment. this one at usc witnesses tell our sister station ktla that the officers moved in around 4 o'clock this morning and dispersed about 100 protesters. it is not clear right now if anybody was arrested, the university issuing a statement on social media saying the encampment has been cleared and that the campus remains close will keep you updated as we learn more. and that was chris wolfe reporting earlier this morning. and for all of the latest information on these campus protests, cease-fire talks and more you can scan the qr code on your screen right now. it will take you directly to kron 4 dot com. back here in the bay area. oakland police are offering a reward to anyone who has information on 2 homicides that took place about a year apart. but they believe they are connected. police say

multiple suspects are connected to the homicide of henry tejada and sean roads. now tejada was shot and killed on april. 20th twenty-twenty on to 68 avenue. a great 2020 nissan armada without license plates was seen pulling up to himmultiple people got out of the car and shot him. he was 23 years old at the time the car was later recovered and determined to be a rental from reno, nevada. roads now was killed and shot on june 1920, 21 on lakeshore avenue right in front of lake merritt. anyone with information about either of these cases is asked to contact oakland police. and the suspect in a standoff on i-80 in fairfield remains in critical condition this morning after chp says he shot himself. now, chp originally reported that he was dead but said later friday night that the medical team we're able to revive him at the hospital.

the standoff began after a multiple county pursuit which started in sonoma county friday afternoon. the eventual police standoff in fairfield shut down. i-80 in both directions for hours affecting thousands of bay area drivers. this law, no county district attorney's office is now handling that investigation right now. and police arrested a man accused of the queue accused of hitting someone in the head with a rifle in walnut creek. >> police say the attack happened back in march near las lomas high school. the victim was found with a head wound believed to be from this stock end of an assault rifle. suspect was later identified as 28 year-old malcolm harris of suisun city. now, this was this week harris was found and arrested by police in las vegas. he is currently in the contra costa county jail. and oakland police are increasing the number of officers on patrol this weekend. they are trying to prevent illegal sideshow activity from happening during cinco de mayo. the department says

during 2022 2023 day told 150 cars issued nearly 80 citations and made several arrests. and the city of san jose is gearing up for its annual cinco de mayo celebrations today. the united little writer council of san jose brought their cars out friday night for a preview of what you can expect to see later today. plenty car fans taking photos as well. the local writer council says it worked with san jose police in the city to make this year celebration better. last year, local leaders called the tactics to shut down highways during cinco de mayo. my sound jose police racist. >> of last year there submissions are some we met with the sounds of police she's my time staff we what last year and week. a mother come out class council come out and that before the see them. i didn't want to. and

sounding the alarm after a program to help low-income families afford internet

expired. >> it provided families $30 a month to help pay for internet bills. our washington correspondent basil john has this story. >> more than 20 million americans have a tough decision to make either pay a more expensive internet bill or disconnect from their service provider. you cannot live in modern america without access to high-speed internet. the affordable connectivity program, a federal program to help struggling americans afford internet access, ran out of money. vermont senator peter welch says congress can't let this go on. this program has made a huge difference. he and ohio republican senator jd vance introduced a bill to extend the program so people can work from home where kids can do their homework. unfortunately, a requirement of living in the 21st century. the program ran out at the start of the month. the fcc announced a partial extension with the reduced discount for may, but nothing after that. we ought to find some way to continue to sure

our responsibility. as for other matters, while garvey voted for former president donald j trump in previous elections. >> this time are you prepared to make an endorsement? no, not at this time again. we'll see most important she says is winning his race. the republican running in a blue state. can you win? absolutely. we've had significant progress with independents. >> those that are undecided, the disenfranchised to democrats and we will win because we care about all people. >> and garbin makes clear he's been meeting with supporters and campaigning all over the state. something he expects will only ramp up as we approach election day, november. 5th reporting in tom wallace kron 4 news. >> congress now has less than a week to pass a major piece of legislation to keep the federal aviation administration running and to ensure the continued safety of air travel. it's kind of reauthorization bill has to be passed every 5 years. and right now the faa is already operating under a short-term extension of that

authorization. congressional negotiators agreed on 105 billion dollar bill to reauthorize the faa. now it just needs the votes to pass before friday's deadline. >> this bipartisan is not only a win for our economy, but for aviation safety advocates and for the flying public. >> the agreed framework would increase the number of air traffic controllers. it will also mandate airports to use new technology to prevent plane collisions on runways. the reauthorization bill also print prohibits airlines from charging families extra to sit together and other consumer protections favored by ministration. 2 are expected to be added. and there are only 3 months until the start of fall classes. but many high school seniors still don't know where they're going to go to college due to the federal government's botched rollout of the new fast of form, washington correspondent jessie turner reports. the delays are increasing fears on capitol hill that many

others weeks, but they're continuing to press forward here in the bay area with students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to health building just like pending a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be it's not happening with the government. >> at >> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students is on day 8 of a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. but i that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but wooden pallets and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a

connected. now police say multiple suspects are connected to the homicide of henry tejada and deshaun roads. tejada was shot and killed on 4/28/2020. on 68th avenue. a great 2020 nissan armada without license plate was seen pulling up to him before multiple people got out and shot him. he was 23 at the time. the car was later recovered and term and to be a rental from reno, nevada. now roads was shot and killed on june 1920, 21, all lakeshore avenue right in front of lake merritt. anyone with information about either of these cases is asked to contact oakland pd. and the suspect in a standoff on i-80 in fairfield remains in critical condition this morning after chp says he shot himself chp originally reported he was dead but said later friday night that medical teams are able to revive him at a local hospital. the standoff began after a multi county pursuit

which started in sonoma county friday afternoon. eventually police standing off with him in fairfield shut down. i-80 in both directions for hours affecting thousands of bay area drivers. the solano county district attorney's office is now handling that investigation. and police arrest a man accused of hitting someone in the head with a rifle along a creek. now police say the attack happened back in march near las lomas high school. the victim was found with a head wound believed to be from the stock and of an assault rifle. the suspect was later identified as 28 year-old malcolm harris of suisun city. this week, harris was found and arrested by police in las vegas. he is currently in the contra costa county jail. and oakland police are increasing the number of officers on parole this weekend. they are trying to prevent illegal sideshow activity from happening this cinco de mayo. the department says during

joining us live as well with a look at your sunday morning forecast. good morning, dave tiffany, good morning and good morning, everybody. i'm showing yosemite national park where they're also seeing a nice little coating of snow. this morning as well from everything that we had just previous from yesterday. nice freakish may storm, you know. >> as far as the sun is concern in the earth, the way they're together, it would look like if you didn't know any better. the first week of august. haha, so just goes to show you that there's a difference between the actual whether you get and where you are in the season sometimes and you get these air masses mixing. 53 expected by tuesday wednesday. 55, a gradual warm-up trend. we like the word gradual because we don't want any melting too quickly with all of that. fill up the rivers. there's are left over low still churning, not so brave without the moisture, is it? but it still some snows in the rockies. next thing to look out for is when this thing gets over the rockies into the plains states taps into that moisture from the gulf of mexico. cold air coming from canada and sometimes booming. get an ice

storm working up there. meanwhile, in our backyard, a weak wave that will bring us some cloud cover tomorrow. we can show you what the projections are now for today. basically on balance, mostly sunny, by the way, the winter storm warnings expired up in the mountains tomorrow morning. maybe some scattered clouds down south of the south bay santa cruz mountains that clears out. and then in the afternoon getting sprayed by some cloud cover as we go into the evening a little bit. so just saying it won't be as picturesque as today, but a pretty much the same and maybe a little bit warmer on that, too. as we continue the trend, you have to deal with the winds today. so you have to go in the closet and grab some of the winter gear that you have. maybe that sweater, the jacket and so forth. you thought you were tired. not yet. we do have some onshore winds at work here for the next 48 hours and popping a little bit in the afternoon. so putting it all together today. a sunny, cool, breezy looks like 50's of the coast chile there. even all that 60's inland. we do start to get some 70's early into the week monday, again, noting some of those clouds and that leftover system then late in the week, it's warm and sunny, 80 by

internet bills. >> our washington correspondent basil john has this story. >> more than 20 million americans have a tough decision to make either pay a more expensive internet bill disconnect from their service provider. you cannot live in modern america without access to high-speed internet. the affordable connectivity program, a federal program to help struggling americans afford internet access, ran out of money. vermont senator peter welch says congress can't let this go on. this program has made a huge difference. he and ohio republican senator jd vance introduced a bill to extend the program so people can work from home where kids can do their homework. unfortunately, a requirement of living in the 21st century. the program ran out at the start of the month. the fcc announced a partial extension with the reduced discount for may, but nothing after that. we ought to find some way to continue to sure that people in ohio can can access new york democratic senator kirsten gillibrand is on board with an extension

dave, thanks. >> kron 4 is your local election headquarters. we continue our coverage of the top candidates running for san francisco. mayor in a move anticipated by political insiders board of supervisors. president aaron peskin announce his candidacy last month. kron 4 stephanie lin sat down with peskin about why voters to trust him to leave the city. >> san francisco aaron peskin is going to look like a caring city gets things candidate aaron peskin projecting confidence as he enters the race for mayor. i've stood up for safety, stood up against hate crimes. the president of the board of tested lawmaker entrenched in the rough and tumble world of city politics for more than 2 decades representing high-profile areas like chinatown, fisherman's wharf, union square and the financial district. we need a neighborhood mayor with experience to rebuild our city. >> from the ground up. >> his past battles with

sobriety now part of his campaign message. i know something about recovery of san francisco is going to recover. let's bring positivity to this i'm tired of the and in a race dominated by centrist democrats, jostling for the spotlight. could peskin is distinctly progressive stance, seize the attention of voters being progressive has really been about listening to and bringing governmental action to folks who need the government the most. we need a leader will fix our city for everyone. >> not one who are in it for the many to please a wealthy outlining 18 policy proposals including increased police staffing. >> expanded red control and notably 15,000 new affordable homes using tax deferred financing. the city has a lot of luxury housing and the city has also been able to maintain singer as can see hotels for the poor service. but missing middle needs to be addressed.

pushing back against critics who accuse him of blocking housing development. the ordinance is finally passed next item earlier this year. city supervisors passed haskins measure imposing density limits in several historic neighborhoods. our neighborhoods are the envy of people around the world. it's not a one size fits all solution on the fentanyl crisis. i support arresting anybody who deals fentanyl or other. >> life-threatening drugs. drug users. on the other hand. >> need. >> services. i asked him if he agreed with challenger mark farrell's promised to clear city's homeless encampments in 6 months. false or fake promises. we need a place for those people to go because what happens in encampments week is people are pushed from one neighborhood to another. that is not a solution. a solution is 2000 shelter beds and i have a plan for that. he great ideas. but why were you

able to achieve them as the president? the board of supervisor supervisors can pass laws but the captain of the team, the quarterback of the team in san francisco is mayor. >> i know how government works. i have deep connections in every department and i think i can bring that to bear as mayor. >> in san francisco, stephanie lin kron, 4 news now when exclusive one-on-one interview with republican u.s. senate candidate steve garvey. >> and one of his first local sit-down interview since advancing to the november general election. the former major league baseball star spoke with our eytan wallace about issues facing our state. >> well, garvey says he's confident he can win this race but acknowledges. >> it won't be easy. it's nice to meet you. how are you see to say steve garvey shaking hands with californians of all ages at the sacramento party? we've got to turn california around. it's one of many stops he's made across the state after finishing in the top 2 during the march primary. i

think we stand the way california for the country speaking with us one on one. he says he's kept busy since voters sent him and democratic congressmember adam schiff to the november general election to face off for the u.s. senate seat. >> long held by the late senator dianne feinstein, where we have common six-and-a-half minds, i think is minor miracle because this is the state of california >> were very aggressive in terms of fat of our mantra, which is common sense, compassion and consensus garvey says much of his focus has turned to the israel-hamas war and the violence on college campuses. how he describes of terrorism disguised as free speech and we should have free speech, but it should be organized the right way it shouldn't attack other people of the century when they're attacking the students who are jewish. it's a hate crime. i support israel yesterday today and tomorrow. i believe we stand by them. we provide their needs, but we can't tell than not to protect their sovereignty on domestic matters. he says if elected to

the senate, he'll push to secure funding for homelessness, resources, local police departments and border security. as for what he describes as the issue, our economy, it's it's the kitchen table. >> to to the gas station to all those needs hardworking men and women have every day. >> they need help that he says must include lower taxes. but it's that very issue of his taxes that's garnered a lot of attention. documents show he's owed at least $350,000 in back taxes to the government is opponent writing californians deserve a senator who will fight for them. not someone who thinks the rules don't apply to him. what do you say to critics who say will you vote a lot of money in taxes? are we supposed to trust you with our tax dollars? >> well, for 50 years. so he's filed my taxes on time. there have been some challenges that we've had. we have ongoing with the irs and state and it will be resolved very near

future. and i never neglect our responsibility. as for other matters, while garvey voted for former president donald j trump in previous elections. >> this time are you prepared to make an endorsement? no, not at this time again. we'll see most important she says is winning his race. the republican running in a blue state. can you win? absolutely. we've had significant progress with independents. >> those that are undecided, the disenfranchised to democrats and we will win because we care about all people. >> and governor makes clear he's been meeting with supporters and campaigning all over the state. something he expects will only ramp up as we approach election day, november. 5th reporting in tom wallace kron 4 news. >> congress now has less than a week pass a major piece of legislation to keep the federal aviation administration running and to ensure the continued safety of air travel, this kind of reauthorization bill has to be passed every 5 years. and right now the fda is already operating under a short-term

extension of that authorization. congressional negotiations agreed on 105 billion dollar bill to reauthorize the now, let's just needing to be voted on and passed before friday's deadline. >> this bipartisan is not only a win for our economy, but for aviation safety advocates and for the flying public. >> the agreed framework would increase the number of air traffic controllers. it will also mandate airports to use new technology to prevent planes from colliding on the runways. the reauthorization bill also prohibits airlines from charging families extra to sit together. another consumer protections favored by the biden administration are expected to be added as well. and there are only 3 months into the start of fall. classes begin, but many high school seniors still don't know where they're going to college due to the federal government's botched rollout of the new fafsa form.

washington correspondent jessie turner reports the delays are increasing fears on capitol hill as well that many students may be forced to forego college. >> the department past to get this right and fast. congress is upping the pressure on the education department. after many high school seniors still have not received their financial aid offers for college. can you briefly describe what you and your staff are doing right now? we're doing everything. >> every day to make it right. education secretary miguel cardona told wisconsin senator tammy baldwin, the new faster was supposed to be shorter and simpler. >> but processing errors and other issues have caused successful applications to be down about 30% from this time. last year, the rollout of the better fafsa has been riddled with delays and challenges. cardona says the department is making progress. officials say the form is fixed and more than 8 million student applications have been processed and sent to colleges. but louisiana

good morning. welcome back to kron. 4 morning news. what a day now today is the parrot patter of rain gone. watch out for the puddles. those still has a poll check in with that. >> they are having because of construction and all that. and they're being pushed back about an hour or so. but you can see the plane still doing their thing. there's the low in place in the west. it's going to be a player for the midwest later this we k producing the typical thunder showers and all of that. for now, it's relatively quiet

compared to what we would call stormy. but there are winds there. still some mountain snows with this. but heavy winds and there's a red flag warning that's actually been posted for most of the stated new mexico. here's what looking upstream, though. this is going to be a little bit of a minor player for our monday, delaying the warm-up that we expect. let's go back to future cast for that's a leftover clouds. it looks like that will take care of that for this afternoon. by the way, up in our mountains, the winter storm warnings. they've all expired starting the day off tomorrow with some scattered clouds looks like in the south a little bit around the peninsula. that clears out, then returns with more some afternoon scattered clouds to make note of for monday afternoon. so almost like a variable cloudy story, but maybe favoring a little bit. the mostly sunny mode. that's going to be for your monday. this an interruption and the way we go for the remainder of the week, pretty much a mostly sunny tuesday. now all of this comes with those onshore winds that we discussed and that will keep temperatures suppressed. through today, a little bit into tomorrow and maybe a touch by tuesday. we're start to lose those surface winds

vehicle owners are now eligible for a new tax credits. the treasury department announcing new credits along with new ev battery rules to allow for automakers to comply on source materials. the credits range from 3700 to $7500 and used evs and hybrids can also qualify for those credits. president biden is expanding health insurance access to dhaka recipients. it will give about 100,000 dreamers, the ability to a role in health care insurance programs under the affordable care act, participants will be able to get financial assistance such as tax credits and reduced out-of-pocket pot expenses. the changes will also go into effect on november. 1st, dhaka program was established in 2012 providing deportation relief and work permits. the immigrants who were brought into the u.s. as children. now to some bay area sports. the

lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. >> and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh, nepal, india, pakistan, sri lanka. he's or nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region royce says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in santa clara county are of south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being represented well in mainstream what was born and raised in india. and she says having other south asians like herself in silicon valley added more reason for this project. these things help them feel more empowered that we are represented actual case at this exhibit, you'll find the sports the food know what

students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to health building just like painting a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be it's not happening with the government. >> but >> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students is on day 8 of a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. but i that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but wooden pallets and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a counter-protester violated vigil of candles. students tell us.

>> they say police responded and took the counter protester away. kron 4 reached out to stanford pd but did not hear back and also give them some support for to know that other people also thinking about moment live act lives in the area and donated supplies to stanford students. she says her daughters are part of the student encampments around the country and wants things to go peacefully. really don't understand why we're fighting the students. >> because all they're trying to ask for is for cease-fire back in san jose state. it's very like is very sad seeing it, especially when the ask people. robert cleveland says he supports the cause of pro-palestine student protests have even thought about. >> i have. but my mom said no, because you don't want and says he's looking forward to the possible protest this week. jonesy and annex group are going to be future of the world, especially and we need to make a change now for about it is not going to happen from the others san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >> meanwhile, campus

operations at ucla are expected to resume in full tomorrow. classes have been remote after violence broke out on campus tuesday night. more than 200 people were also arrested or early thursday morning. critics of the university's police chief saying that he did not do enough to keep students safe during the chaos. chris wolfe has the latest. >> firework. the fireworks. >> always john fenoglio reported from the front lines tuesday evening when counter-protesters described by some simply as a mob launched an attack on an expansive pro-palestinian encampment set up in the heart of ucla. >> according to reports, authorities did not respond properly to handle the melee

for 3 hours in some witnesses tell ktla when officers did arrive, they were slow to enter the fray. now the la times is quoting sources as saying ucla police chief john thomas is facing growing scrutiny for how his department handled the violence that evening. >> the article mentions serious security lapses and explains the thomases. sure. university leadership on the morning before the and he could mobilize course is quote, in minutes. but thomas is denying those allegations declaring he did everything possible to provide security and protect students. just a shame that we've come to this point where >> jewish students feel like they can't. they're unsafe on campus where obviously there's a lot of parents suffering in the middle east right now. and i think that there's a lot of people that don't really quite understand the the complexity of this conflict that dates back. not just 75 years, but thousands of years. >> that was chris wolfe

reporting and new this morning, police in riot gear clearing another encampment. this one at usc witnesses telling our sister station ktla that the officers moved in around 4 o'clock this morning and disperse about 100 protesters. it is not clear right now if anybody was arrested, but the university is issuing a statement on social media saying that the encampment has been cleared and that the campus remains close will keep you updated as we learn more on this. and for the latest information on campus protests, cease-fire talks and more you can scan the qr code on your screen right now and we'll take you directly to kron 4 dot com. back here in the bay area. oakland police are offering a reward to anyone who has information on 2 homicides that took place about a year apart. but they believe the 2 may be connected. now police say multiple suspects are connected to the homicide of henry tejada and deshaun roads. tejada was shot and

killed on april. 20th twenty-twenty on 16th avenue. a gray 2020 nissan armada without license plates was seen pulling up to him before multiple people got out and shot him. he was 23 years old at the time the car was later recovered and determined to be a rental from reno, nevada. rhodes was shot and killed on june 1920, 21 on lakeshore avenue right in front of lake merritt. anyone with information about either of these cases is asked to contact oakland pd. and the suspect in a standoff on i-80 in fairfield remains in critical condition this morning after chp says he shot himself. chp originally reported he was dead but said later friday night that medical teams are able to revive him at a nearby hospital. the standoff began after a multi-county pursuit which started in sonoma county friday afternoon. the eventual police standoff in fairfield shut down. i-80 in both directions for hours affecting

thousands of bay area drivers. the slowing county district attorney's office is now handling that investigation. police arrest a man accused of hitting someone in the head with a rifle in walnut creek. now police are saying the attack happened back in march near las lomas high school. the victim was found with a head wound believed to be from the stock and of an assault rifle. suspect was later identified as 28 year-old malcolm harris of suisun city. this week, harris was found d arrested by police in las vegas. he is now currently in the contra costa county jail. and oakland police are increasing the number of officers on patrol this weekend. they are trying to prevent illegal sideshow activity from happening this cinco de mayo. the department says during 2022 2023, told 150 cars issued nearly 80 citations and made several arrests. the city of san jose

is gearing up for its annual cinco de mayo celebrations today. the united low-rider council said jose brought their cars out friday night for a preview of what you can expect to see later today. plenty of car fans also taking photos as well. the low rider council says it worked with san jose police and the city to make this year's celebration better. last year, local writers called the tactics to shut down highways during cinco de mayo by san jose police as racist. >> of last year, there submissions are some we met with the sounds of police she's my time staff we what last year and week. a mother come out class council come out and that would be for the seat in the mine that and for most of what the plans were. >> the police department has released those planned road closures in an effort to be more transparent.

congress is trying to step in and help.

>> senators are sounding the alarm after a program to help low-income families afford internet access expired. it provided families $30 a month to help pay for internet bills. our washington correspondent basil john has the story. >> more than 20 million americans have a tough decision to make either pay a more expensive internet bill disconnect from their service provider. you cannot live in modern america without access

to high-speed internet. the affordable connectivity program, a federal program to help struggling americans afford internet access, ran out of money. vermont senator peter welch says congress can't let this go on. this program has made a huge difference. he and ohio republican senator jd vance introduced a bill to extend the program so people can work from home where kids can do their homework. unfortunately, a requirement of living in the 21st century. the program ran out at the start of the month. the fcc announced a partial extension with a reduced discount for may, but nothing after that. we ought to find some way to continue to sure that people in ohio can can access new york democratic senator kirsten gillibrand is on board with an extension through the end of the year. it would provide 7 billion dollars for the program has broad bipartisan support and we're hoping to get included in the faa bill that we're negotiating this month. texas republican senator john cornyn agrees the program is necessary and wants to avoid cases of fraud or mismanagement. want to make

months until start of classes fall classes, but many high school seniors still don't know where they're going to college due to the federal government's botched rollout of fafsa. >> so washington correspondent jessie turner reports the delays are increasing fears on capitol hill as many students may be forced to forego college. >> the department past to get this right and fast. congress is upping the pressure on the education department. after many high school seniors still have not received their financial aid offers for college. can you briefly describe what you and your staff are doing right now? we're doing everything. >> every day to make it right.

education secretary miguel cardona told wisconsin senator tammy baldwin, the new faster was supposed to be shorter and simpler. >> but processing errors and other issues have caused successful applications to be down about 30% from this time. last year, the rollout of the better fafsa has been riddled with delays and challenges. cardona says the department is making progress. officials say the form is fixed and more than 8 million student applications have been processed and sent to colleges. but louisiana senator bill cassidy argues the damage is already done. some students we'll decide not to go to school because they don't know if they can afford cassidy says those enrollment decisions would also pose a major threat to colleges. that cash flow problem will be very real. republicans recently requested an investigation into the rollout and last week, the official who oversaw the fastball update announced he's stepping down next month in washington. i'm jessi tenure.

>> asian american and pacific islander heritage month is now in full swing throughout the month of may. kron 4 will be highlighting the bay area's diverse asian communities as san jose state. an exhibit at the library is celebrating south asian cultures and kron four's jack moment reports. >> well, the region known as south asia makes up 7 different countries in the library. curator here at the king library at san jose state says she wanted to include the religions in the foods that make up each of these cultures. she wanted to also consults with families living here in the bay area who also have ties to those countries. that's really cool. yeah. so these 2 things trailing could yes. and this is also from sri lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. >> and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled

south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh, nepal, india, pakistan, sri lanka. he's or nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region royce says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in santa clara county are of south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being represented well in mainstream what was born and raised in india. and she says having other south asians like herself in silicon valley added more reason for this project. these things help them feel more empowered that we are represented actual case at this exhibit, you'll find the sports the food know what to do signing and the religion sick man will never will never see them their turbans. it's part of their faith. troy highlights the for south asian religion seen in the south bay islam hinduism. jane isn't and buddhism. what we really enjoyed in our experience of
