north bay, a huge chunk of napa, sonoma, marin county right now starting out in the low and mid 60s. so that will get us into the 80s later on today. part of the reason why we're mild, we have this wind right now still offshore that is breezy and that is giving those temperatures their mild start right now. so we take a live look from the rooftop camera here at kgo along the embarcadero. it is sunny all day long. sunrise here very shortly at 605. it's warm to hot. we'll have 70s along the coast mid and upper 80s for your hottest spots inland. >> hi sue, good morning drew and good morning everyone. we have got a beautiful morning. if you have to be stuck in traffic then at least it's pretty outside. we do have a problem in san leandro that we'll get to, but i wanted to show you the san mateo bridge, which is getting a little busy this morning. you've got about a 17 minute drive time across the bay. all right, let's hit our big problem this morning, which is a big rig blocking the two. right lanes on northbound 238 in san leandro,

near hesperian. you are backed all the way onto 580 into the uh- castro valley. and big rigs, by the way, are allowed to use 580 because of this sig alert. >> sue. thank you. happening today, a key vote in the saga over a potential name change. oakland airport wants to add san francisco bay to its name. san francisco is not a fan of that plan. abc seven news reporter ryan curry live at oakland international to sort this whole thing out. and ryan, san francisco city attorney sent a letter urging oakland to drop the name change. >> good morning. city attorney david chu trying again to stop this move from the port of oakland, saying that if they do not work together, san francisco and oakland and the port of oakland, he will proceed with this lawsuit. he telling them in a letter that both sides should work together on a name that benefits both san francisco and oakland. he filed a lawsuit back in april claiming the proposed name change will create chaos and confuse millions of travelers. he also says it

infringes on sfo's trademark. the port board voted unanimously back in early april to change the name, and they told abc seven news back then, sfo cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive term san francisco, let alone claim exclusive rights to the san francisco bay. the port trust that travelers understand the san francisco bay. like virtually every other major metropolitan metropolitan area throughout the world, can contain more than one airport. david chu, in his letter yesterday saying, if oakland continues to rebuff our offers to partner, we will have to move forward with the next steps in our trademark lawsuit. he went on to say the collaboration is good for both parties. he wants them to work together, not against each other, to try to figure out a solution to these two sides going against each other. right now, the port of oakland saying they feel as if they need to do this to help make travel more convenient for people in oakland. >> all right. thanks ryan. now, bart's financial situation is

bad and it's only expected to get worse. transit officials believe voters approval of a tax measure may be the only hope for survival. today, the agency will discuss its latest budget projections. they show bart will run out of nearly $2 billion in state and federal funding around april 2026. that money has been making up losses from lower sales tax revenue and fewer riders since the pandemic. by 2027, the agency expects to face a $385 million deficit. >> tesla appears to be under a hiring freeze in north america. the company currently has just three openings on its jobs board and archive version of tesla's website shows there are 3400 open jobs in the u.s, mexico and canada at the beginning of the month, and this comes a month after tesla laid off about 10% of its 140,000 person workforce. and we're told summer internships were reportedly revoked for some students happening today, california utility regulators are set to

make a big decision about our electricity bills. >> they are scheduled to vote on a proposal that would change the way privately owned utility companies like p-g-and-e's can build customers. if approved, most people would notice two changes a $24 per month flat rate and a lower electricity usage rate. that flat rate fee would be used for things like grid maintenance and wildfire mitigation, which are currently included in the usage rate. >> going to make utility bills more affordable for low income households. that will reduce the volatility of month to month bills, and it will promote electric creation. >> if this proposal is approved, the new billing structure would take effect next year. new parking meters in downtown san bruno are causing a lot of frustration for some people. >> now. business owners are asking for a change. they held a meeting with city council members to address their concerns. people now have to pay for at least a full hour because there's no partial hour parking. >> i paid two hours for a 30

minute swim lesson. i feel like in san francisco, most of them, it's just like an up arrow down arrow. and you do like a quarter of an hour increments. like something like that would be a lot easier and seems pretty intuitive. >> the city of san bruno rolled out their pay by plate kiosks on downtown streets and parts of el camino real on april. the meters require payments seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in some areas, and this morning, we're remembering former peninsula congressman and environmentalist pete mccloskey. >> he died yesterday at the age of 96. mccloskey served seven terms in the house from 1967 to 1983. many considered him a maverick republican, staunchly against the vietnam war and the first member of congress to publicly call for the impeachment of president richard nixon. he also co-chaired the first earth day in 1970, and helped write the federal endangered species act. mccloskey served in the marine corps during the korean war, where he was awarded the navy cross and silver star. he spent

the last 20 years of his life farming in the sacramento valley. >> this is one of my prized possessions, having served in congress. i don't know if you can see this, but, he presented this to me, midway through my career and he said he wanted me to have one of his purple hearts because he said there was no equivalent medal for a civilian who have served and been wounded. and, he thought this was one way of rectifying it. so it's a treasure. >> speer also shared with us a picture taken last week of mccloskey and his wife, helen. speer calls it a beautiful depiction of true love. >> time now. 608. and we're taking a live look from our oakland camera right now. it is mild, 63 degrees currently, but we also have this northeasterly wind. that's an offshore wind. look at your humidity levels. we're down to 33. so it feels

dry out there this morning. and it is warm. so the headline today is that we are set to sweat. this is going to be some of the warmest air we have seen since last october. later on this afternoon. temperatures today are going well into the 80s. so you look at the first column. that's your forecast. highs right now. the second column is where we typically land and you can see the difference is about 12 to 17 degrees warmer later on this afternoon soon. so we'll look at future weather. we were we warm very fast today 10 a.m. we're in the 70s by lunchtime we're seeing 80s pop up on the board. and then later on this afternoon . noon. we're well into the 80s in most cities, so a high of 81 today in the city, we'll go to 84 in oakland, 87 in san jose, 88 in santa rosa. even the coast from half moon bay to santa cruz, low 70s to the low 80s. and it gets even hotter here inland tomorrow, where 90s are back for the first time this year, we'll take a look at the

for the 14th. that 14th day in a row and more is on the way today. in the past 24 hours, three people were killed in tennessee and north carolina, a state of emergency was declared in gaston county, north carolina. that's last night where a powerful storm took down highway signs and power lines. one person was killed by a falling tree. >> if you go by sims park, the winds were so strong that blew the wall down. so there's a lot that's happened here in gaston county. there were catastrophic. >> the highest risk for tornadoes today will be in alabama and georgia. convicted theranos founder elizabeth holmes has had her sentence reduced again. holmes was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for defrauding investors at the palo alto blood testing startup. she started serving time at a federal prison camp in texas last may. in july, her projected release date was december of 2032. now it's four months earlier, in august of 2032. prison officials are not allowed to say what led to her

earlier release date because of privacy, safety and security reasons. we're following up on an idea we first told you about yesterday on abc seven mornings. there's a new proposal to help small businesses in san francisco still recovering from the pandemic. on monday, two business leaders submitted a measure that would overhaul the city's tax system. this proposal would increase the revenue cap that would exempt small businesses from paying taxes. currently it's at $2 million. it would go up to $5 million. it's a move that proponents say would allow for more business expansion and hiring. >> 60% of our retail businesses would be completely exempt from our gross receipts tax. >> anything that can help small businesses would definitely be welcomed. >> to offset the cost of the proposed tax breaks, rates would rise again in 2027. >> it's the a's final season at the coliseum before heading to sacramento and then las vegas. crunch contending numbers. it seems bay area fans might be

losing interest in them. feel like that is the understatement of the year,ut we are getting a look at the attendance numbers for the first 21 home games of the season. the yellow shows this season's peak at about 13,500 fans on opening day. the low was just 2900 fans. on monday last season is shown in blue, with more than 25,000 fans on opening day. >> this is sad because i've loved the a's all my life and he's brought me here since i was just a baby, and it's like my whole childhood is just right here in this stadium, another a's fan says he will follow the team, but the move is not an easy transition. >> manfred and fisher have done the impossible. they've lessened my interest in major league baseball. i will never be a giants fan, and i will go see them in sacramento and i'll see them in vegas, but it will never be the same for me. >> the team is averaging slightly more than 600 or 6000, i should say fans per home game this year. >> a new docu series on hulu is

let's look at highs across the region, starting in the south bay, well above average 85. in santa clara, 83. in cupertino, 84 in morgan hill along the peninsula, 84, los altos, 87 in redwood city, the coast is mild in the 70s for half moon bay and pacifica downtown. today we'll hit 81, the first 80 degree day. this year, the warmest since last october. even daly city quite warm with sunshine at 78 degrees in the north bay, will have 70 for the coast from bodega bay to stinson, sausalito at 7888, in santa rosa today, 85, in napa, the east bay. it is bright and it is warm. 84 for oakland, 85, in fremont, union city, 83 in richmond and inland. we're in the upper 80s. 87 walnut creek will hit 88 in brentwood later on today, so it's a warm afternoon that will lead to a mild evening. your evening planner. you can see we're still in the 70s in most areas, even through 8 p.m, and then those temperatures gradually cool into the 60s as we approach midnight. so overnight tonight, we'll have mainly clear skies, just a

the colleges they will be attending next fall. for many, they're the first in their family to attend college. organizer say the ceremony honors the students academic achievements against long odds. only 50% of oakland's black and brown seniors graduate. what's considered college ready, and they made it to best friends from florida, drove 500 miles from jacksonville to key west in toy cars. the 29 year olds are known for doing challenges and sharing them on social media. they've been adventure buddies since they were kids. >> we used to ride around with toy cars as kids, and we've always wanted a guinness world record attempt, so we're like, this would be a fun way to like, kind of honor our childhood. >> they originally wanted to break the guinness world record for the longest journey in a toy car, but they raised more than $16,000 for a nonprofit that helps homeless animals that put them in a separate category. and

very much like summer out there this afternoon. a live look from our east bay hills camera. nothing but sunshine. we are totally clear across the region. it is breezy though in the north bay. i have been getting reports from folks on social media saying in parts of napa valley sonoma we are seeing those winds 16, 20, 25mph. and that offshore breeze is not only lowering the humidity, it probably feels dry out there this morning to your skin, but it's also creating a warmer start to the day. look at this 24 hour temperature change. we're nearly 20 degrees warmer in santa rosa right now compared to this time yesterday. 14 degrees warmer in oakland. so a lot of us are getting out the door this morning and you're automatically feeling that mild air. we are starting out in the 60s across a huge portion of the region. so we're in store for a warm to hot afternoon. here's a look at your day planner today. that sun has risen. we have a mild morning out there. we are warming fast today and by the afternoon we have 70s along the coast away from the coast, mid and upper 80s for daytime highs. hi sue, good morning. >> true and we are taking a look

at the richmond-san rafael bridge. it is starting to back up here. delays back to castro street. if you are heading westbound on 580 across the span over to marin county, your drive time on the span is about eight minutes and we have a problem in san leandro. it's been a big rig out blocking two lanes, and it looks like that they have cleared it. we are going to take another look here in just a couple of minutes. there was a sig alert issued. this is north 238 near hesperian. the traffic still looks very slow from castro valley and big rigs still allowed on 580. once again we'll check back in a few. >> all right sue thank you. happening today, the port of oakland is set to vote on finalizing the new name of the oakland airport. it would be called san francisco bay. oakland international airport. now, the city of san francisco is once again warning them to stop. abc seven news reporter ryan correia is live at oakland international, and ryan san francisco is urging oakland to come up with a different name. >> yeah. that's right. good morning amanda. they actually

>> black man, get out of here. we are taking over alamo square and how dare you be professional. a dog walker. >> the police department is investigating outing these rallies will be held saturday at alamo square at 1030 and 430. >> frustrated families in san francisco are demanding change in how tips are reported in crimes like murder, cold cases. there are cash rewards of up to $250,000 for some of san francisco's unsolved homicide cases, but there has not been a single payout in more than a decade. some family members of victims call it a slap in the face. >> it's time for them to step up and, talk about this and try and help families to get some type of resolution for their loved

ones. >> the police commission is looking into whether the current policies are too restrictive. anonymous tipsters are not given rewards, and the tip has to lead to a conviction. the head of sfpd's homicide unit says he is not against changing those policies. however, chief bill scott says it's about more than money. he says witnesses often don't come forward due to the fear of retaliation. >> new developments in the protests on college campuses sacramento state has become the first public university in california to align with pro-palestinian protesters demands. the university says it will no longer invest in companies that, quote, profit from genocide, ethnic cleansing and activities that violate fundamental human rights. students say they were told the university held no direct investments, but will be dumping $4.5 million in indirect investments if this is possible. >> on one campus. we've raised

the bar nationwide and internationally. and so again, a message to all students don't ask for anything less. >> student protesters are calling this a win. they have been camped out for eight days prior to the decision by campus administration. >> here in the bay area, two groups are calling for a federal investigation into alleged racism and islamophobia at berkeley unified schools. a new civil rights complaint claims there is a hostile environment of anti-palestinian anti-arab and islamophobic discrimination within the district. meanwhile, the u.s. education department is launching an investigation into the allegations of severe and persistent anti-semitism in the district. yesterday on capitol hill, superintendent ford morthal acknowledged nine anti-semitic incidents but says the issue is not pervasive. >> when investigations show that

an anti-semitic event has occurred. we take action to teach, correct and redirect our students. we do not publicly share our actions because student information is private and legally protected under federal and state law. as a result, some believe we do nothing. this is not true. >> republican lawmakers pushed back, questioning her about district curriculum and if phrases deemed by jews and others as anti-semitic are acceptable. >> one of the slides in this curriculum said. for some palestinians from the river to the sea is a call for freedom and peace. do you think that's an appropriate thing to have on a slide for students? >> we definitely believe that it's important to expose our students to a diversity of ideas and perspectives. and if it was presented as a perspective, i do think it's appropriate. local representatives of the council on american-islamic relations and the american-arab anti-discrimination committee also submitted a federal civil rights complaint. >> they allege more than a dozen incidents of discrimination at berkeley schools, and are also demanding an investigation.

>> new at six mayor london breed is considering dropping out of the first major debate in san francisco's mayoral race. she tells politico she's concerned about the connection between her rival, mark farrell, and the lead event organizer. together, sf action board of supervisors president aaron peskin recently said he will not participate in the debate for this same reason together. sf is known as a centrist advocacy group. the debate is scheduled for may 20th. >> another controversial bike lane is coming to san francisco. the sfmta approved a project to rip up the street in front of city college to have new protected bike lanes installed. the plan to redo frida kahlo way will get rid of nearly 30 parking spots. the city college board of trustees is against the project, saying the loss of parking would severely impact students who have no other choice than to drive support. others say the plan would make it safer for bicyclists and pedestrian, and improve conditions at muni bus stops.

we have this offshore wind, and it's pretty strong in the hills of the north bay. could see some areas gusting 30 to 50mph, and those winds are certainly affecting the hills and the east bay as well. these winds are going to dramatically drop as we head into the afternoon. so we start out windy this morning, but the winds are a lot lighter this afternoon. highs today versus average. we're going into the 80s for daytime highs. that's the first column. that's about a 12 to 718 degree above average day compared to where we typically land in the 60s and low 70s. so future tracker temps showing you by 10 a.m. we're basically into the 70s already, so we quickly warm this morning. by lunchtime, our 80s are starting to appear on the board, and then later on this afternoon we have widespread 80s, including the city today, the first 80 degree day of san francisco this year, a high of 81. today in san francisco, it is warm in oakland at 8487, in san jose, 88. in santa rosa, the same in concord, even mild along the coast. it turns even hotter

areas. so let's take a closer look at these highs in our microclimates. let's start in the south bay. widespread 80s 84 in morgan hill for a high 87 in san jose, warm in cupertino at 83 from san mateo to redwood city, palo alto. we're all in the 80s, even along the coast. it's a mild day with a lot of sunshine. 75 for pacifica downtown today, that high of 81 will be the first 80 degree day of the year. also, the warmest weather since last october. even for the sunset, richmond districts will be warm in the upper 70s for the north bay. it is a warm one. 88 in santa rosa, 86 in san rafael, sausalito. at 78, the coastline is mild. stinson is at 77 today with full sunshine, 85 in napa, the east bay today, 82, in berkeley, 84. oakland 86, castro valley 85. for fremont and inland, we're in the upper 80s today. 87 walnut creek, 88, in brentwood, pleasanton. up to 85 degrees overnight tonight. we'll keep those clear skies except for the immediate coastline. around half moon bay will likely see a little bit of patchy fog
